Song of the Day #1,778: ‘Mother (Live)’ – Natalie Maines

natalie_maines_motherToday’s track isn’t from an album I own (yet) but one I’m definitely intrigued by.

Natalie Maines, lead singer of the on-hiatus Dixie Chicks, has released her first solo album — an album of mostly cover songs titled Mother. The title track (presented here as a live performance) is the Pink Floyd classic from The Wall — definitely an interesting choice.

In addition to the Floyd track, Maines performs songs by Eddie Vedder, Ben Harper, Patty Griffin and Jeff Buckley, along with a few tracks she co-wrote herself. It’s an unusual approach for a first solo album.

Maines continues to earn a lot of good will for me for the same reason she continues to earn a lot of ill will from others — her vocal stance against then-President Bush and subsequent refusal to apologize for speaking her mind. It’s amazing to me that a decade after that incident, you still can’t watch a YouTube video of her without reading those disgusting attacks.

How dare she criticize the president during wartime, say the people who call Obama a communist Nazi who lied about his birthplace to win the office. People… they’re the worst.

Mother do you think they’ll drop the bomb
Mother do you think they’ll like the song
Mother do you think they’ll try to break my balls
Ooooh aah, Mother should I build a wall
Mother should I run for president
Mother should I trust the government
Mother will they put me in the firing line
Ooooh aah, is it it just a waste of time *
Hush now baby don’t you cry
Mama’s gonna make all of your
Nightmares come true
Mama’s gonna put all of her fears into you
Mama’s gonna keep you right here
Under her wing
She won’t let you fly but she might let you sing
Mama will keep baby cosy and warm
Ooooh babe ooooh babe ooooh babe
Of course Mama’s gonna help build the wall

Mother do think she’s good enough for me
Mother do think she’s dangerous to me
Mother will she tear your little boy apart
Oooh aah, mother will she break my heart
Hush now baby, baby don’t you cry
Mama’s gonna check out all your girl friends for you
Mama won’t let anyone dirty get through
Mama’s gonna wait up till you come in
Mama will always find out where
You’ve been
Mamma’s gonna keep baby healthy and clean
Ooooh babe ooooh babe ooooh babe
You’ll always be a baby to me
Mother, did it need to be so high.

I heard her do this song on Howard Stern’s show (with Fred playing guitar). Incidentally, she is a big Stern fan and is very forthcoming and provocative when on his show. So, in addition to her unabashed political stance, she earns points with me for appreciating Stern.:)

This is really a hard song to cover well because it is so slow, ethereal and atmospheric as done by Pink Floyd. Still, she does a nice job with it.

I’m intrigued by this album as well. Will be curious to hear what you think of it once you get it.

I wonder where this was recorded. I find her voice so versatile – strong and fragile at the same time. Please tell me when we own this album so I can hear it too. I’m interested in her cover of anything Eddie Vedder.

Imagine the crap they got for telling the truth! I’ve been a fan of theirs ever since.
