Song of the Day #1,762: ‘Emotions’ – Mariah Carey

mariah_careyAll of the hated songs I’m featuring this week are popular, as hated songs usually are. Nobody works up any vitriol over an obscure B-side.

Mariah Carey’s ‘Emotions’ was her fifth number one hit in a row (making her the only artist to ever have her first five singles reach #1). She dominated the airwaves in the early 90s the way Katy Perry has twenty years later.

This song isn’t horrible for most of its running time, but what puts it over the edge into the ‘loathsome’ category are Carey’s dog whistle vocal acrobatics. In an effort to show off her multi-octave range, Carey repeats an escalating run that ends up someplace inhuman.

It’s obnoxious and assaulting and does nothing to improve the song. It’s a “look at me!” moment that instantly turned me off from Carey for the rest of her career.

You’ve got me feeling emotions
Deeper than I’ve ever dreamed of
You’ve got me feeling emotions
Higher than the heavens above

I feel good
I feel nice
I’ve never felt so
I’m in love
I’m alive
Flying high
It feel like a dream
When you touch me tenderly
I don’t know if it’s real
But I like the way I feel

In the morning
When I rise
You are the first thing
On my mind
And in the middle
Of the night
I feel your heartbeat
next to mine
It feels like a dream
When you love me tenderly
I don’t know if you’re for real
But I like the way I feel

You know the way to make me
lose control
When you’re looking into my eyes
You make me feel so

I had no idea what this song was initially, yet I nodded in agreement simply when I saw Mariah’s name. Yup, I thought, I’m sure it’s loathsome. I remember seeing her on an episode of SNL (I’m pretty sure it was SNL) and being so impressed by her voice – not the dog whistles but the range. I also remember that was the first – and last – time I felt that way. From the moment I heard any of her recorded songs, I hated them. And, increasingly, her for singing them.

I could have sworn that this song was a cover from a 70s disco diva like Donna Summers. Apparently, I was wrong. Dog whistles aside, though, it is a pretty decent disco song. I’m fairly sure there are other Mariah songs for which I hold greater contempt.

Had to turn it off as Molly went nuts 🙂
