I’m not prepared to write a proper review of the new fun. album, Some Nights, because I’ve listened to it only a couple of times all the way through.
But I can say that I already love it.
The oddly punctuated trio most resemble a modern-day incarnation of Queen, with no shortage of operatic bombast in their pop repertoire (popertoire?). This is the sort of ballsy, go-for-broke ambition you rarely see in the alt-rock world.
fun.’s breakthrough track, ‘We Are Young,’ is typical of the style and attitude on this album, and it’s a stunner, with a soaring chorus that etches itself into your brain after a single listen. But it’s not even the best thing on the album.
I’d give that honor to ‘Why Am I the One?,’ a rousing blend of Queen and The Beatles, with honorable mention going to second single ‘Some Nights.’ Also impressive are the hip hop influenced ‘All Alright,’ ‘It Gets Better’ and ‘One Foot,’ which could all fit comfortably on a Kanye West record (and probably will someday).
I plan to listen to this album a lot in the near future and I suspect it will rise high on my year-end list.
I need to get my story straight
My friends are in the bathroom getting higher than the Empire State
My lover she’s waiting for me just across the bar
My seat’s been taken by some sunglasses asking about a scar, and
I know I gave it to you months ago
I know you’re trying to forget
But between the drinks and subtle things
The holes in my apologies, you know
I’m trying hard to take it back
So if by the time the bar closes
And you feel like falling down, I’ll carry you home
Tonight, we are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun
Now I know that I’m not
All that you got, I guess that I, I just thought
Maybe we could find new ways to fall apart
But our friends are back
So let’s raise a cup
‘Cause I found someone to carry me home
Tonight, we are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun
Carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na)
Just carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na)
Carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na)
Just carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na)
The world is on my side
I have no reason to run
So will someone come and carry me home tonight
The angels never arrived
But I can hear the choir
So will someone come and carry me home
Tonight, we are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun
So if by the time the bar closes
And you feel like falling down
I’ll carry you home tonight
I too have liked what I have heard from this band. Today’s song drew me in, but “Some Nights” is even better. I definitely need to listen to the rest of the album.
They were on SNL recently with something else which I really loved. This along with Foster the People are my favorites in new music (which for me is anything newer that 1979) š
Andrea, I completely empathize, though my “new” music coincides with my college years, so I get all the way to the last 80’s! š This is a great song, and, Clay, I really like your comparison of this sound to Queen. I never would have thought of it, but I totally hear it. Very cool.
