Song of the Day #1,545: ‘I Want the World to Stop’ – Belle & Sebastian

Every time I listen to Belle & Sebastian, I’m overcome by this feeling that I never need to listen to anything else.

It’s a quality of their music that doesn’t just strike a nerve but grabs hold of a nerve and strums it like an upright bass.

I’ve felt that way even more in recent years as the band has expanded their sound from the twee chamber pop of If You’re Feeling Sinister to the more robust, 60s-pop sound of their past few albums.

If you’re never going to listen to anything else, after all, you want a little variety.

Like R.E.M., covered earlier this week, Belle & Sebastian fall into the ‘Folk Rock Derivative,’ ‘Pure Pop’ and ‘Melancholy’ categories. That’s a nice combination also shared (over the course of this project) with Josh Rouse and Ron Sexsmith. I could live with those four acts in permanent rotation, no question.

With only one day left in this seven-week project, I can see I have a lot of data-crunching ahead of me. What other shared combinations will emerge? Stay tuned.

I want the world to stop (I want the world to stop)
Give me the morning (give me the understanding)
I want the world to stop (I want the world to stop)
Give me the morning, give me the afternoon
The night, the night

Let me step out of my shell
That’s wrapped in sheets of milky winter disorder
Let me feel the air again, the talk of friends
The mind of someone my equal

I want the world to stop…

Tinseltown has followed me from Tinseltown to
Grey adorable city by the docks
Girls will walk in moving air
The sun hangs low, the girls don’t care
As they paint themselves at dusk

I want the world to stop…

Towns’ and cities’ populations up and grow
The workers move to the suburbs
In between I watch and go
I run alongside rush hour traffic
A prayer for every car

I want the world to stop…

I want to write a message to you
Every day at ten o’clock in the evening
Yellow pearl my city is
This is your art
This is your Balzac, your Brookside, and your Bach

I definitely see the folk derivative and pop elements of their music. Haven’t really heard much of the melancholy.

Looking forward to that genome data crunching. šŸ™‚

Seriously? Other than ‘twee,’ I’d say ‘melancholy’ is their defining trait. A Google search of “Belle & Sebastian AND melancholy” would break the internet!

  3. Clay says:

I love the word twee. And I will now start using it in daily conversation just to bother you. šŸ™‚
