Song of the Day #1,272: ‘Trailer For Rent’ – Pistol Annies

Top Ten Songs of 2011 – #6

Miranda Lambert is responsible for two of my top three albums this year: her fourth solo album, Four the Record, and Hell On Heels, the digital-only debut of Pistol Annies, a group formed with two friends and fellow songwriters, Angeleena Presley and Ashley Monroe.

Lambert had a hell of a year. She became the first artist in the history of Billboard’s country charts to have her first four albums debut in the #1 spot. And the Pistol Annies album debuted atop that chart as well.

I’m guessing part of the reason for her tremendous success is that she is beloved by traditional country music fans but has also amassed a fan base outside of the genre. It is common to read comments on the Web about her music that go something like this: “I hate country music but I love Miranda Lambert!”

That’s a rather amusing sentiment about somebody who is frequently called the next Loretta Lynn.

Hell On Heels is definitely more of a traditional country release than Lambert’s solo album, and wonderfully so. The three women complement each other beautifully, both with their vocals and their songwriting, on songs about economic woes, deadbeat husbands, hell-raising country music women and boys from the south.

My favorite track is one of Lambert’s solo songs, ‘Trailer For Rent,’ about a woman so fed up with her husband that she’s putting both herself and their trailer on the market. My only complaint about this fabulous ditty is that it’s not twice as long.

I left the beans on
I put my jeans on
And drove down to the Jonesville News & Times
I said to the man, I need to place an ad
How much will it be for these four lines
‘Cause my husband’s pissed me off for the last time

Trailer for rent, no down payment
Comes with some holes and dents
Where I got tired of his shit
Call if you’re interested
Trailer for rent

It’s been ten years, ten thousand beers
And he’s still sittin’ right there on the couch
I’ve played the Mrs. and I’ve done the dishes
‘Bout time somebody got the hell out
My phone ought to be ringing right about now

‘Cause theres a trailer for rent, no down payment
Comes with some holes and dents
Where I got tired of his shit
Call if you’re interested
Trailer for rent

I really liked the first song, the title track, you featured from this album, but this one is exactly the type of twangy mid-tempo country number that I just don’t like. Lyrics are fun enough, but, wrapped in this musical package, it just does nothing for me.
