Song of the Day #1,005: ‘Flaws and All’ – Beyoncé

It’s been awhile since I’ve offered up a Beyoncé song. Two months, in fact, which is way too long.

‘Flaws and All’ is a track from her 2007 album B’day. Most of the songs I’ve heard from that album are beat-heavy dance tracks but this is a nice ballad tucked in between the thumpier stuff.

The idea of Beyoncé having flaws is kind of silly from my pathetic vantage point, but the truth is you know Jay-Z every once in awhile rolls his eyes and thinks “I am so tired of her shit.” She might be the most perfect human yet conceived, but she is still human.

And once again, Beyoncé proves to be the master of the video art form. Here we have an assembly of shots of her playfully flirting directly into the camera… it might be the best use of film stock since Citizen Kane.

I’m a train wreck in the morning
I’m a bitch in the afternoon
Every now and then without warning
I can be really mean towards you
I’m a puzzle yes indeed
Ever complex in every way
And all the pieces aren’t even in the box
And yet, you see the picture clear as day.

[Chorus]
I don’t know why you love me
And that’s why I love you
You catch me when I fall
Accept me flaws and all
And that’s why I love you
yes that’s why I love you
and that’s why I love you

I neglect you when I’m working
When I need attention I tend to nag
I’m a host of imperfection
And you see past all that
I’m a peasant by some standards
But in your eyes I’m a queen
You see potential in all my flaws
and that’s exactly what I mean.

[Chorus]
I don’t know why you love me
And that’s why I love you
You catch me when I fall
Accept me flaws and all
and that’s why I love you
yes that’s why I love you
and that’s why I love you

I’m a train wreck in the morning
I’m a bitch in the afternoon
Every now and then without warning
I can be really mean towards you.

I don’t know why you love me
And that’s why I love you
You catch me when I fall
Accept me flaws and all
and that’s why I I love you.

You are just too funny with this Beyonce obsession!

Citizen Kane, surely you jest ๐Ÿ™‚

It is a very cute video, but it disturbs me a bit to think of her team (including her husband, I wonder?) dreaming up new ways to please her ardent fans. “Let’s give them a video filled with unguarded moments of our charming, beautiful, sexy star,” they think, and there it is for some unstable psychopath to watch obsessively until he’s convinced that the object of his affection is flirting directly with him – rather than the camera and all of the millions of viewers on the other side of its lens. Suddenly, he’s sending flowers and notes, wanting to put a ring on that finger and waiting outside her compound for a glimpse of the woman he is destined to marry.

Next think you know it there is a request for a restraining order and a brief mention in teh police blotter of the local paper.

Sorry for that odd aside, it just strikes me that a video such as that one, which intends to be manipulative, probably appeals to all sorts of freaks, in addition to this blog’s very stable fan ๐Ÿ™‚

So… we can expect another entry within the next month, I’ll assume?
