Song of the Day #304: ‘Another Believer’ – Rufus Wainwright

robinsonsWainwright’s 5th, and most recent, studio album was Release the Stars, probably his weakest effort to date but still one of the best albums I’ve heard in the past few years. Unfortunately it’s been almost impossible to find YouTube clips from this album. I’ve previously highlighted ‘Going to a Town,’ one of my favorite tracks on the album, and a live version of ‘Sanssouci‘ on this blog, so feel free to check those out.

Instead of a crappy live version of another Release the Stars track, I’m turning today to one of the many soundtrack contributions Wainwright has made over the years, this one for the animated film Meet the Robinsons.

This is a great song that manages to work just splendidly in the context of a kids’ movie without sacrificing any of the touches you find in Wainwright’s other work, like the elaborate backing vocals and complex instrumentation.

The movie was pretty good, too, and more proof that it’s hard to go wrong with a time travel story.

Hello, I got something to tell you
But it’s crazy, I got something to show you
So give me just one more chance, one more glance
And I will make of you another believer

Guess what?
You got more than you bargained
Ain’t it crazy?
You got more than you paid for
So give me just one more chance, one more glance
One more hand to hold

You’ve been on my mind, though it may seem I’m fooling
Wasting so much time, though it may seem I’m fooling

What are we gonna do?
What are we gonna do about it?

So then, that is all for the moment
Until next time, until then, do not worry
And give me just one more chance, one more glance
And I will make of you, yeah I’m gonna make of you another believer

You’ve been on my mind, though it may seem I’m fooling
Wasting so much time, though it may seem I’m fooling

What are we gonna do?
What are we gonna do about it?

Hello, I got something to tell you
Hello, I got something to tell you
You’ve been on my mind, wasting so much time…

Hmmm…. I don’t remember this song in the context of the film. I’ll have to look out for it the next time I watch. Meanwhile, what a great theme week that would make! Songs contributed to soundtracks by diverse artists – Bruce Springsteen in Philadelphia and The Wrestler, Lyle Lovett, Randy Newman (though that’s a couple of weeks alone)… Very intriguing.

I see you are staying away from the whinier fare. Good calls!
