Taylor Swift’s 2019 Lover led to a shift in my appreciation for the talented singer-songwriter. Prior to this album I was more of a reluctant fan, appreciative of her gifts but wearied by the drama — often self-generated — that surrounded her.

This was the first release I was able to appreciate on its own merits, regardless of its position in the Taylor Swift narrative. To be honest, I think that was due to my own growth, not hers.

It’s also the first Swift album I gave the track-by-track ranking treatment, something I’ve done for every one of her releases since.
