Throwing back to the week of February 19, 1994, we find Celine Dion atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘The Power of Love,’ a cover of Jennifer Rush’s hit from a decade before.
Rush co-wrote the song and released it on her eponymous 1984 debut. It was a minor hit in the U.S. but tore up the charts in the UK, becoming that regions biggest single of the year and ninth-biggest of the decade.
Throwing back to the week of January 29, 1994, the Billboard Hot 100 was topped by the unlikely team of Bryan Adams, Sting, and Rod Stewart on the song ‘All for Love’ from the soundtrack of the 1993 film The Three Musketeers.
I vaguely remember that movie, which starred Keifer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, and Oliver Platt as the titular trio, but I don’t remember this song at all. That’s despite it staying in the #1 spot for three straight weeks.
Mariah Carey has the most #1 songs by a solo artist (19), so it stands to reason she’ll show up on Throwback Weekends. The week of January 8, 1994, saw her top the charts with ‘Hero,’ her eighth #1 in her first four years of recording.
Carey co-wrote the song but initially wasn’t moved to record it herself and planned to give it to Gloria Estefan. She eventually reconsidered and ended up with one of her signature songs, one she has performed at multiple live events, including the inauguration of President Obama.
The week of December 11, 1993, saw Janet Jackson holding on to the #1 spot of Billboard’s Hot 100 with ‘Again‘ and Meat Loaf in the second slot with ‘I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That).’
At #3 that week was Swedish dance pop group Ace of Base with a single that eventually peaked at #2 — ‘All That She Wants.’ The band would later score a #1 hit with ‘The Sign,’ from the same album.
The week of November 20, 1993, saw Meat Loaf hanging on to the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That).’ It would have been more appropriate for turkey to top the chart that Thanksgiving week, but I guess Meat Loaf will do.
At #2 was Janet Jackson with ‘Again,’ the third single from her hit album Janet and the second to hit #1 (it reached the top spot for two weeks in December).
