Throwing back to the week of March 9, 1974, we find Terry Jacks atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Seasons in the Sun.’
This song was first written and recorded in 1961 by the Danish artist Jacques Brel as ‘Le Moribond’ (which means ‘The Dying Man’). The lyrics described a man’s final messages to his friends, a priest, and his wife — who was cheating on him with one of his friends. In 1964, the Kingston Trio recorded an English-language version, retitled ‘Seasons in the Sun.’
Throwing back to the week of February 16, 1974, we find Barbra Streisand atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘The Way We Were,’ the theme song from her movie of the same name.
In addition to topping the charts for three non-consecutive weeks that year, ‘The Way We Were’ took home an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and the Grammy for Song of the Year. Streisand was also nominated at the Academy Awards for Best Actress, the last time the Best Song winner was performed by a nominated actress until Lady Gaga repeated the feat with 2018’s A Star is Born.
Throwing back to the week of January 26, 1974, we find Ringo Starr on the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 with ‘You’re Sixteen’, a cover of a 1960 hit by Johnny Burnette.
You can file this track under “songs you couldn’t get away with today,” and indeed Starr has said in concert that he doesn’t sing this one anymore. But in early 1974, nobody was creeped out by a 33-year-old man singing about his romance with an underage girl.
Throwing back to the week of January 5, 1974, we find Jim Croce at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with the beautiful love ballad ‘Time in a Bottle.’
Sadly, Croce had died the previous September in a plane crash that also took the lives of five others — including bandmate Maury Muehleisen, who played guitar on this song.
The week of December 9, 1973, saw the Carpenters atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Top of the World.’ This country pop song spent two week at #1 as part of a ten-week stint on the chart.
This was the second of three career #1s for the duo, though they had five #2 hits between this song and their first chart-topper, ‘(They Long to Be) Close to You.’
