Song of the Day #5,367: ‘American’ – Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey piggybacked on the success of Born to Die by releasing an EP titled Paradise in November of 2012. She included the EP in a special edition of the album as well.

The eight-song Paradise finds Del Rey delivering more of the baroque pop featured on her debut and fewer of the trip-hop beats. On opening track ‘Ride,’ she channels Bruce Springsteen, one of her more surprising influences.

Song of the Day #5,366: ‘Summertime Sadness’ – Lana Del Rey

Given that Lana Del Rey’s first album was removed from circulation after only a couple of months, her 2012 sophomore release Born to Die is widely considered her debut. It’s certainly the album that put her on the map.

Released in January of 2012, Born to Die was boosted by the unexpected success of lead single ‘Video Games.’ That song, a dreamy ballad featuring Del Rey’s mournful vocals over a bed of piano and strings, sounded like something from a bygone era.

Song of the Day #5,365: ‘Kill Kill’ – Lana Del Rey

When I laid out my March posts awhile back I planned to dedicate this week to my first reactions to Lana Del Rey’s new album, which was due to drop on March 10. That release has since been pushed back two weeks, so I’ll have to do the same with my posts.

The adjustment is actually quite simple. I had planned to follow up the new album content with a two-week retrospective of Del Rey’s career to date, so instead I’ll just flip the order and do the discography deep dive first. Song of the Day #5,295: ‘Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd’ – Lana Del Rey

Thank you again to Daniel for taking the blog reins over the past couple of weeks to count down his favorite 2022 albums. I’m inspired by his passion for the music that moves and excites him.

I still don’t get Drake, though.

I don’t know if I’ll do a better job this year keeping up with new music. I’ll try, but I well may be leaning on guest bloggers again 12 months from now.

However, I know there’s at least one album I’ll be firing up on day one: Lana Del Rey’s ninth studio album, titled Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, is due on March 10.

Song of the Day #5,146: ‘Yayo’ – Lana Del Rey

‘Yayo’ is a track from Lana Del Rey’s 2012 EP Paradise, released less than a year after her breakthrough album, Born to Die.

This is actually the third release of this song. It first appeared on a 2008 three-song EP titled Kill Kill under Del Rey’s given name, Lizzie Grant. The same version showed up on Del Rey’s self-titled full-length debut, released in 2010 but subsequently removed from circulation.
