I’m surprised that this is the first track from Kate Bush’s 1985 album Hounds of Love I’ve featured on the blog. Through nearly 3,000 songs, I would have expected at least the great ‘Running Up That Hill’ to have its moment in the spotlight.
The truth is, I’ve only really gotten into the first handful of songs on the record, but they’re all great. Perhaps my favorite of all of them is today’s random selection, ‘Mother Stands For Comfort.’
Three years before Kate Bush released her most acclaimed album, Hounds of Love, she set the table with her fourth record, The Dreaming. This was the first album Bush produced on her own and she took advantage of the chance to let her freak flag fly.
Hounds of Love is a great art pop album, and the only one of Bush’s records I own. Her style is a bit too out there for my taste, but I recognize the talent.
With all of the great songs on Peter Gabriel’s So (‘Sledgehammer,’ ‘Red Rain,’ ‘In Your Eyes,’ ‘Mercy Street’… wow!), it’s easy to forget this inspirational track.
Teaming up with Kate Bush, better known for her avant garde songwriting than this sort of lush balladry, Gabriel recorded a grand ode to perseverance, a precursor to ‘Everybody Hurts.’
Though ‘Don’t Give Up’ isn’t a love song in the traditional sense, I find it achingly romantic. That’s due in large part to the interplay of Gabriel’s and Bush’s vocals, not to mention the video of them hugging throughout the performance (must have been an interesting shoot).
