Song of the Day #3,473: ‘Froggie Went A Courtin” – Bruce Springsteen

Of all the songs in my music collection, the oldest may well be ‘Froggie Went A Courtin’,’ an English folk song dating back to the 16th century.

I own two versions of the song, one by Bob Dylan on his 1992 album of folk covers Good As I Been To You, and this one by Bruce Springsteen, which appeared on his 2006 album We Shall Overcome: The Pete Seeger Sessions.

Song of the Day #3,439: ‘Book of Dreams’ – Bruce Springsteen

It’s a rare twofer on Random iTunes Weekends, with back-to-back songs by The Boss. Today’s track is from Bruce Springsteen’s 1992 album Lucky Town.

Lucky Town was released the same day as Human Touch, and the general critical consensus was that the two albums would have been better served if some of the fat was trimmed and they were combined into one record.

Song of the Day #3,438: ‘Blinded By the Light’ – Bruce Springsteen

‘Blinded By the Light’ is the first track on the first album by Bruce Springsteen, kicking off 1972’s Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ with a burst of folk-rock word salad. It was also the first single he released, though it didn’t perform very well.

Not until the British rock group Manfred Mann’s Earth Band got a hold of it, anyway.

Song of the Day #3,283: ‘She’s No Lady’ – Lyle Lovett vs. Bruce Springsteen

Arguments about artist selection, seeding and who should beat who aside, this Montauk Madness bracket system ultimately works, producing plenty of heavyweight matchups already.

Lyle Lovett vs. Bruce Springsteen is a doozy, pitting two of the best songwriters and lyricists I’ve ever heard against each other in just the second round.

Springsteen got here by dispatching John Mellencamp in a unanimous vote, while Lovett came close to his own sweep, besting Elliott Smith with 89%. Continue reading
