Song of the Day #5,071: ‘I’m Still Waiting’ – The Wailers

I’ve been wanting to do another one of my artist deep dives, wherein I listen to every album by an artist I know only casually. My first three deep dives covered Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, and Madonna. I found all three very rewarding.

I’ve settled on Bob Marley for the next one, which kicks off today. Apart from the mega-selling greatest hits collection Legend, I have never heard a Marley album all the way through, and I’m excited to learn more about the man and his music.

Along with The Wailers, Marley released 13 studio albums between 1965 and 1983. I’ll feature songs from each of them over the next three weeks.

Song of the Day #4,965: ‘Waiting in Vain’ – Bob Marley

Ah, nothing like a little Bob Marley to close out the weekend. ‘Waiting in Vain,’ a slow jam exploration of unrequited love, appeared on Marley’s 1977 album Exodus.

My knowledge of Marley’s discography is restricted to the greatest hits collection Legend, the top-selling reggae album of all-time. That record collects all of Marley’s best-known hits but has been criticized for leaving out his more challenging political work.

Song of the Day #4,127: ‘Concrete Jungle’ – Bob Marley and The Wailers

Bob Marley and the Wailers’ 1973 album Catch a Fire was their fifth, but it feels like a starting point. It was their first album with the Island label, and the first to have the distinctive instrumentation and production with which casual fans are familiar.
