Song of the Day #1,026: ‘Man in the Long Black Coat’ – Joan Osborne

Two of the songs in my cover series are Bob Dylan originals. I guess it makes sense that the work of somebody with as limited a voice as Dylan would attract more capable singers.

I’ve already featured another Dylan cover that could have fit here, and like yesterday’s post, it was by Adele. I wouldn’t be surprised if she has a covers album in her future… she’s a fine interpreter of others’ tunes.

Joan Osborne is as well (and she has released a covers album — 2002’s How Sweet It Is). Today’s song, however, comes from her excellent debut album, Relish.

Song of the Day #980: ‘Simple Twist of Fate’ – Bob Dylan

I started the week with Sea Change, Beck’s haunting breakup album, and I’m ending it with the greatest breakup album of all-time.

Released in 1975, Bob Dylan’s Blood On the Tracks is the high point of an unparalleled career (one I’ve explored exhaustively over nearly a year’s worth of Bob Dylan weekends).

On tracks such as ‘Tangled Up in Blue,’ ‘You’re a Big Girl Now,’ ‘If You See Her, Say Hello’ and ‘Idiot Wind,’ Dylan explored the disintegration of his marriage through raw poetry and aching performances. Even the lighter, more romantic, songs — ‘Shelter from the Storm’ and ‘Buckets of Rain’ — are run through with sadness.

Song of the Day #902: ‘Tomorrow is a Long Time’ – Bob Dylan

Best Songs of 2010 – Honorable Mentions

I featured a lot of Bob Dylan on the blog this year, with my Dylan Weekends spanning from late January through October. Then Dylan returned the favor with a late year release, the latest in his Bootleg series.

The Witmark Demos: 1962-1964 (which is in my backlog of things to review) is a collection of early recordings Dylan made for the purposes of selling his songs for covers and selling his talents to major labels. The 2-disc set contains rough versions of such early classics as ‘Blowin’ in the Wind,’ ‘Masters of War,’ ‘Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,’ ‘The Times They Are A’Changin” and more.

Song of the Day #818: ‘Series of Dreams’ – Bob Dylan

This weekend marks the final installment of my Dylan Weekend series. Certainly Bob Dylan has produced enough material to keep this going pretty much forever, but I feel that I’ve covered a wide enough range of his output to do some justice to the man in my own small way, and it’s time to look elsewhere.

I started the series back on January 30 with ‘You’re No Good,’ the first song on Dylan’s first studio album. Tomorrow’s track will be the 70th Dylan Weekend song I’ve featured since then. Over that span, I’ve posted songs from 34 studio albums and six bootleg collections.
