Jack Antonoff has a nice mix of artists and genres in his Rolling Stone list, which is one reason I decided to blog about it this week.
An 80s New Wave band, a modern-day electro-pop artists, the Piano Man himself and now a country selection from the Dixie Chicks. Nice variety.
The third song Jack Antonoff mentions in his Rolling Stone list is Billy Joel’s epic ‘Scenes From an Italian Restautant.’
Now I know what a great song this is, and how great Billy Joel is, and I suspect most of my regular readers share that opinion… but the man does not get much respect in the “cool” circles. So I’m heartened to see Antonoff unabashedly express his appreciation for a great songwriter.
Continuing my week of songs recommended by Jack Antonoff, of fun. and Bleachers, we arrive at ‘Be a Body’ by Grimes.
I’m somewhat familiar with Grimes because she showed up on a bunch of top ten lists a year back, but I’ve never really paid her much attention. I’ve featured one of her tracks on the blog but wasn’t very impressed by it.
Every issue of Rolling Stone features a ‘Guest List’ column, wherein a popular artist names five songs that he or she loves and/or views as an influence. It’s a nice look at musicians as fans.
This week I’m going to feature the five songs named by Jack Antonoff, guitarist for fun. and leader of new band Bleachers (which landed a SOTD mention a few weeks back).
Well, I guess the Random iTunes Fairy is on a Smiths kick, or at least a Morrissey kick. ‘Papa Jack’ is a cut from the mopey crooner’s 1997 solo album Maladjusted.
This song appeared on only the early releases of that album, making it a bit of a collector’s item. Perhaps I’ll sell my copy one day and retire on the proceeds, as I might have done with my childhood Star Wars toys had my mother not given them away to a neighbor’s kid. (Just checking to see if you’re reading, mom!)
