Song of the Day #4,972: ‘I Spy’ – Guster

Here’s a track from 1999’s Lost and Gone Forever, the third studio album by Boston-based indie rock band Guster.

This album was my introduction to Guster and I put it up there with follow-up Keep It Together as the best thing they’ve done.

On this album, the band was still sticking to its “no sticks” percussion philosophy, with drummer Brian Rosenworcel playing bongos and other instruments by hand.

Song of the Day #4,971: ‘Your Mother Should Know’ – The Beatles

This is the third Random Weekend to feature The Beatles in this young year. Perhaps the Random iTunes Fairy heard my pledge to feature more Beatles songs and took on the mantle herself.

Today’s track, from 1967’s Magical Mystery Tour, is a fine example of just how great the band’s output is no matter how deep into their catalog you go. ‘Your Mother Should Know’ is a dancehall ditty written by Paul McCartney in a style his parents enjoyed.

Song of the Day #4,965: ‘Waiting in Vain’ – Bob Marley

Ah, nothing like a little Bob Marley to close out the weekend. ‘Waiting in Vain,’ a slow jam exploration of unrequited love, appeared on Marley’s 1977 album Exodus.

Song of the Day #4,964: ‘This Love (Will Be Your Downfall)’ – Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding returns to the blog, two and a half years since her last Random Weekend appearance. The English singer-songwriter released four albums between 2010 and 2020, but her debut Lights remains the only one I’ve heard.

I haven’t really heard this one either, to be honest. Lights is in my iTunes library because my wife bought it back in 2011. I’ve never shared her appreciation of Goulding (and, despite her early interest, I don’t think she has listened to this album in years).

Song of the Day #4,958: ‘Tennessee Song’ – Margo Price

Tennessee singer-songwriter Margo Price makes her third appearance on the blog, all for her debut album, 2016’s Midwest Farmer’s Daughter.

The first post marked the release of this album, one I enjoyed very much, and the discovery of a promising new talent. The second post, two years later, bemoaned the fact that I hadn’t listened to Price much at all since first encountering her, and noted that she had recently released a sophomore album.
