Song of the Day #3,257: ‘As I Went Out One Morning’ – Mira Billotte

One week ago today, the Random iTunes Fairy served up a track from the I’m Not There soundtrack, a cover of Bob Dylan’s ‘One More Cup of Coffee’ by Roger McGuinn.

Today we get another cut from the same album, this time a take on the John Wesley Harding track ‘As I Went Out One Morning’ by singer/multi-instrumentalist Mira Billotte.

Song of the Day #3,256: ‘Black Sails in the Sunset’ – Elvis Costello

Elvis Costello in his prime was as prolific and consistently excellent as anybody to ever step in front of a microphone.

Today’s Random SOTD, ‘Black Sails in the Sunset,’ was left on the cutting room floor during the recording of 1981’s Trust. It’s certainly worthy of inclusion on that album or any other, and yet it’s far from the best outtake Costello has released. His rejects are better than most people’s official catalogs.

Song of the Day #3,255: ‘Twilight’ – Elliott Smith vs. Lyle Lovett

Today’s Montauk Madness first round matchup is one of the hardest to date. The beautiful melancholy of Elliott Smith against the wry virtuosity of Lyle Lovett. One man whose career was cut tragically short by suicide and another who seems to have stopped recording new music altogether after a brilliant decade-long run from 1986-1996.

Song of the Day #3,254: ‘My Hometown’ – Bruce Springsteen vs. John Mellencamp

At first blush, today’s Montauk Madness matchup has a student vs. master dynamic. Early in his career, John Cougar was viewed as a poor man’s Bruce Springsteen.

But John Mellencamp has carved out quite the career in the four decades since his debut. In fact, he’s released five more albums than Springsteen in three fewer years, and spanned a variety of styles along the way.

Song of the Day #3,253: ‘Without a Fight’ – Brad Paisley vs. Lana Del Rey

Brad Paisley vs. Lana Del Rey seems like an entirely left-field matchup in Montauk Madness, but given Paisley’s track record of collaboration, I would not be at all shocked if these two paired up on his next album.

Paisley was the first true country artist I loved, a journey I chronicled in this blog entry after the release of American Saturday Night. That album and the few that preceded it are all classics of the genre.
