Song of the Day #3,860: ‘All the Stars’ – Kendrick Lamar & SZA

This week I’ll count down my favorite movies of 2018, two per day, from #10 down to #1.

This was the hardest top ten movie list I’ve made in years. I saw 70 films this year and enjoyed the great majority of them. It isn’t until you reach the bottom ten or so that I really disliked anything I saw (unlike actual movie critics, I have no obligation to see something I don’t think I’ll like).

Any of the films in my 11-20 slots could have easily found their way into this top ten, and might do just that if you ask me to revisit the list over time.

Song of the Day #3,859: ‘One Down (Live)’ – Ben Folds

Ben Folds is such a good songwriter that he can’t deliver a bad tune even when he wants to.

‘One Down’ is about a time Folds’ record company required him to write 4.6 songs in order to fulfill his contract. Apparently he received .4 worth of credit for an earlier co-written song.

He shit this one out (as he colorfully puts it) to chip away at the obligation.

Song of the Day #3,858: ‘The Needle Has Landed’ – Neko Case

This is the final track on Neko Case’s 2006 album Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, one of the very best albums of that year and, really, that whole decade.

Fox Confessor was my first exposure to Case and it remains the best thing she’s ever done. The album became a family favorite, especially beloved by my then 4-year-old daughter. She still plays it today at 16.

Song of the Day #3,857: ‘Hearts Beat Loud’ – Kiersey Clemons

Next week I will count down my top ten movies of 2018, two per day. Last year was a great one for film and this list was one of the hardest I’ve had to put together in the many years I’ve been doing this.

I saw 70 movies from 2018, thanks in large part to streaming services like NetFlix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. I saw my fair share on the big screen as well (some more than once). That’s probably the most movies I’ve seen from a single year in a long time, yet I’m still kicking myself for missing out on several key titles.

Song of the Day #3,856: ‘Rain on the Roof’ – Hugh Grant & Company

The final acting category in my 2018 Oscars rundown is Best Supporting Actor.

I’m pretty well caught up with the most-discussed performances in this category. The only two major ones I have yet to see are Sam Rockwell in Vice and Richard E. Grant in Can You Ever Forgive Me? I really regret having missed the latter and hope it shows up on demand soon.
