My final entry from the year-end Billboard Hot 100 is yet another country bro in a week of nothing but. This one is Luke Combs’ song from the movie Twisters, ‘Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma.’
My preferred song from the Twisters soundtrack is Miranda Lambert’s ‘I Ain’t in Kansas Anymore,’ but as we’ve seen over the past couple of weeks, country hits are currently solely the purview of the men (and Beyoncé).
Now I’ve covered the Top 39 of 2024, a sign I’m doing a decent enough job paying attention to what the kids are listening to. I’m a little bummed I didn’t close it out with a round Top 40, but I’m one ‘Wanna Be’ by GloRilla & Megan Thee Stallion away.
It’s a fascinating Top 40, split almost down the middle between pop women and country men, plus a couple of rap songs, a couple of R&B songs, and a couple of folk pop songs.
Let’s see if 2025 follows that pattern or if we’re in store for a shift in musical tastes.
I keep chasing that same old devil
Down the same old dead-end highway
Riding that storm running through my veins
Like a shot down tailspun airplane
Scared of nothing and I’m scared to death
I can’t breathe and I catch my breath
But I keep chasing that same old devil
Down the same old dead-end highway
[Chorus]
Ain’t no love in Oklahoma
Just the whistle of a long black train
You’ll know when it’s coming for ya
Riding in on the wind and rain
[Verse 2]
I got saved in the same Red River
The same Red River tryna drown me
It ain’t knocking me down, I’m standing my ground
With the whole world falling all around me
I keep running, but I’m standing still
Pray for peace, but I need thе thrill
So I keep chasing that same old devil
Down the samе old dead-end highway
[Chorus]
Ain’t no love in Oklahoma
Just the whistle of a long black train
You’ll know when it’s coming for ya
Riding in on the wind and rain
[Chorus]
Ain’t no love in Oklahoma
Just the whistle of a long black train
You’ll know when it’s coming for ya
Riding in on the wind and rain
Ain’t no love in Oklahoma
Just the whistle of a long black train
You’ll know when it’s coming for ya
Riding in on the wind and rain
With all due respect to Miranda, “Ain’t No Love….” Is the standout song from Twisters, and one that, if Daniel had his way, would be nominated for (and win) the Oscar for best song.
Wow, a lot of love for this song. Doesn’t do a lot for me, but I would rather see it nominated than anything from Emilia Perez!
Regardless of how you felt about Emilia Perez, “El Mal” was a standout song and tour de force moment in the movie. Absolutely deserving of a nomination.
It was fine, but I can name ten songs I’d rather see nominated.
I would not mind if Vissi d’Arte from the movie Maria sung by Maria Callus would be nominated, but I suppose Puccini will not be nominated 🤷♀️
