Song of the Day #5,458: ‘Paddleboat Breakup’ – Ben Folds

Continuing my countdown of the songs on Ben Folds’ new album, What Matters Most

#4 – ‘Fragile’

Folds has been married five times (his current marriage, knock on wood, is the only one not to end in divorce) and his song catalog is well-stocked with evidence of his relationship difficulties.

He’s written a few straight-up love songs (‘The Luckiest‘ is probably my favorite) but he’s had more success writing about the tough times. And he’s never shy about digging into the uncomfortable dynamics that rarely make it into songs.

Such is the case with ‘Fragile,’ a sadly beautiful track about a woman who uses her sensitivity to her advantage. “Something so fragile about you,” Folds sings, “It’s how you get away with what you do.” He wraps up the chorus in biting fashion: “And I almost believe you.”

#3 – ‘Paddleboat Breakup’

Here’s another gorgeous anti-love song, this one demonstrating Folds’ knack for concise storytelling. In this track a couple finds themselves on a paddleboat, far from shore, when the man makes the ill-advised decision that it’s the right time to split up. The song builds slowly to a surprise twist in which the woman confesses she had “something big to say” and was waiting for the romantic lake setting to do it.

Is she pregnant? Planning to say “I love you” for the first time? That’s left to the imagination. But given her boyfriend’s feelings about their relationship, I can’t imagine things would have ended any better if she’d spoken up first.

Tossed about the ocean
In boats built for a lake
Life is but a dream
A stream of beautiful mistakes

On a quiet lake
So far from the shore
We had paddled for an hour
Back would be way more

She said, “That’s just great, oh
What is wrong with you?
You wait ’til we’re trapped in a boat
To tell me we’re through?”

But in the safest dark
It had seemed so clear
Tell the truth and let the daylight shine
Watch the shadows disappear
And then the morning came
And I couldn’t bring myself to say it

So we went through all seasons
Wrapped in safety vests
The bright red sun, it seared my soul
Her eyes, they burned the rest

You must really hate me
To have planned it out like this
You can get us back to the shore
I’m not rowing shit

And then the questions came
With no place to hide
Why did I blurt it trapped alone in a boat?
I rowed against the tide
I guess I had all day
But I couldn’t bring myself to say it

So we turned in our vests
And headed to our cars
She said bye and drove away
But mine, it would not start

And now the sun is setting
And everyone has left
I’m waiting for the tow truck now
And she just sent a text

She said
“You see, these last few days
I’ve had something big to say
How romantic it would be to wait
And I could tell you on the lake
But then you dropped that bomb
And I couldn’t bring myself to say it”

  1. Dana Gallup says:

Both great songs, and it looks like we will be in agreement on the best 2, though I may have moved “Fragile” ahead of “Winslow Gardens.”

  2. The Cool Guy (Daniel) says:

“Fragile” immediately resonated with me for many of the same reasons you articulate so well above. It’s by its title and nature a very fragile love song about not wanting to do anything but coexist with someone, but finding yourself perturbed by little things that you either embrace or run away from. I didn’t immediately get “Paddleboat Breakup” in the same way but appreciate your auditory guide in a potential re-listen!!

  3. Peg says:

Married 5 times! Why doesn’t he just try living together to see how it works out just saying

  4. Maddie says:

These are two of my favorites so I’m happy to see them toward the top of your rankings!

I give Fragile a slight edge above Paddleboat because I think Folds’ vocals are just gorgeous on it. I always appreciate when he’s able to use his falsettos to bring in such emotion and add to the flow of a song.
