Ron Sexsmith’s Blue Boy comes in at #7 on my list of 2001 albums. This was my first exposure to the Canadian singer-songwriter and remains my favorite of his albums.
Produced by Steve Earle, Blue Boy has a more polished and eclectic sound than Sexsmith’s first few releases. He dabbles in reggae and torch styles, along with his usual quiet balladry and pop rock staples, and manages to make it all sound of a piece.
I would recommend Blue Boy as a good starting point for anybody interested in listening to Sexsmith. And I would offer up today’s SOTD, ‘Tell Me Again,’ as a perfect example of the beautiful acoustic ballads he serves up on album after album.
Lost, walking in the rain looking for myself
For somehow I find myself missing
Please tell me again
Blue flowers on the hill where’s my valentine
I’m leaning on the sill waiting for a sign
And if I promise to listen
Would you please tell me again
Please tell me again, I’ve forgotten all
The wind told us when you and I were small
For there must be something I’m missing
Please tell me again, tell me again
You look into my eyes and the words you say
Help me to realize love won’t ever fade
But I can’t believe what I’m hearing, please tell me again
No, I can’t believe what I’m feeling, please tell me again
Very nice. It’s just that everything else I’ve heard from Sexsmith sounds much like this, so, to paraphrase a prolific music blogger’s recent comment about the Indigo Girls, a little bit of Ron Sexsmith goes a long way.😀
