Even now that I’m making an effort to keep up to at least some degree with what the kids are listening to these days, I miss things.
I saw the first ever performance of today’s SOTD, Maroon 5’s ‘Moves Like Jagger,’ when front man Adam Levine performed it on The Voice with fellow coach Christina Aguilera.
But then it fell completely off my radar. And, I assumed, neither did anybody else. I dismissed it as a failed attempt to capitalize on a large TV audience. Nice enough song, but instantly forgotten.
So imagine my surprise when I find out that not only did the song not disappear, it became a massive hit, selling millions of digital copies, anchoring a re-release of Maroon 5’s last album, spending several weeks at the top of the charts and becoming the biggest hit either Maroon 5 or Christina Aguilera have had in years.
Just last week Entertainment Weekly wrote a blurb about ‘Moves Like Jagger’ fatigue. Fatigue? I’ve heard this song once!
I credit Wikipedia with bringing me up to speed on the song’s trajectory, and for giving me a big laugh with this explanatory sentence: “The song’s lyrics refer to a male protagonist’s ability to impress a female with his dance moves, which he compares to those of The Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger.”
Wikipedia descriptions of famous songs… that could make for a great Tumblr.
Just shoot for the stars
If it feels right
Then aim for my heart
If you feel like
And take me away, make it okay
I swear I’ll behave
You wanted control
So we waited
I put on a show
Now I make it
You say I’m a kid
My ego is big
I don’t give a shit
And it goes like this
[Chorus]
Take me by the tongue
And I’ll know you
Kiss me till you’re drunk
And I’ll show you
You want the moves like Jagger
I’ve got the moves like Jagger
I’ve got the mooooooves… like Jagger
I don’t need try to control you
Look into my eyes and I’ll own you
With them the moves like Jagger
I’ve got the moves like Jagger
I’ve got the mooooooves… like Jagger
[Verse 2]
Maybe it’s hard
When you feel like you’re broken and scarred
Nothing feels right
But when you’re with me
I make you believe
That I’ve got the key
So get in the car
We can ride it
Wherever you want
Get inside it
And you want to steer
But I’m shifting gears
I’ll take it from here
And it goes like this
[Chorus]
Take me by the tongue
And I’ll know you
Kiss me till you’re drunk
And I’ll show you
You want the moves like Jagger
I’ve got the moves like Jagger
I’ve got the mooooooves… like Jagger
I don’t need try to control you
Look into my eyes and I’ll own you
With them the moves like Jagger
I’ve got the moves like Jagger
I’ve got the mooooooves… like Jagger
[Bridge]
You wanna know how to make me smile
Take control, own me just for the night
And if I share my secret
You’re gonna have to keep it
Nobody else can see this
So watch and learn
I won’t show you twice
Head to toe, ooh baby, roll me right
And if I share my secret
You’re gonna have to keep it
Nobody else can see this
And it goes like this
[Chorus]
Take me by the tongue
And I’ll know you
Kiss me till you’re drunk
And I’ll show you
You want the moves like Jagger
I’ve got the moves like Jagger
I’ve got the mooooooves… like Jagger
I don’t need try to control you
Look into my eyes and I’ll own you
With them the moves like Jagger
I’ve got the moves like Jagger
I’ve got the mooooooves… like Jagger
Well, we also first heard the song on The Voice, but have then heard it many times since on the Hits station. I also wasn’t so blown away by the song when it was performed on The Voice (although I thought it was pretty catchy), but after many repeat listenings, I find it incredibly infectious.
It is a great dance tune. Would love to see what Sophia and Fiona do with it!
I’m not a big fan of repetitious songs, so this one loses points there. Still, I agree with Jeanne that it is a fine dancing tune! 😉
I don’t find this song repetitious at all. As Maddie and I pointed out, it’s nothing like “Rumor Has It!”
