The best T.V. season ever?

sawyerOver the past 5-10 years, television has increasingly taken over as the dominant filmed art form in terms of quality. There have certainly been many great theatrical films over that span, and it’s still tough to beat the experience of the big screen, but television’s ability to tell complex tales across multiple seasons and to evolve characters over many years is unique.

I don’t know when the switch came from episodic television that was truly episodic (with each hour or half-hour essentially self-contained) to the complicated mythologies that are so common today. Perhaps it was Twin Peaks or The X-Files, or something earlier that I’ve never seen.

Song of the Day #226: ‘Drop’ – The Pharcyde

pharcydeApparently the celebrated, world-renowned Jamie Thraves got the inspiration for his backward Coldplay video in part from Spike Jonze’s video for The Pharcyde’s ‘Drop.’

This song marks a first for the Song of the Day series… the first time I’m featuring a song I’ve never heard of by a group I’ve never heard of. According to AllMusic.com, The Pharcyde was “an influential alternative rap quartet from South Central Los Angeles” who had fleeting success in the early to mid-90s.

Song of the Day #225: ‘The Scientist’ – Coldplay

coldplayIt seems the really provocative and interesting videos are all directed by the same group of people. Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry are definitely in that group, and so is Jamie Thraves, who directed Radiohead’s video for ‘Just’ and is my connection to today’s song, ‘The Scientist’ by Coldplay.

Inspired by the lyric “Oh let’s go back to the start,” Thraves came up with the reverse-action concept for this video, his goal being to tell a tragic tale with a happy ending. It’s a powerful bit of filmmaking, all the better for the lovely song it accompanies.

Song of the Day #224: ‘Just’ – Radiohead

radioheadOK, this is the weakest connection yet in this ‘six degrees of separation’ thread… today’s song simply shares in common with yesterday’s the word “just.” I know, lame, but I really like this song.

As I’ve written before, Radiohead is hit-or-miss for me, with the hits coming mostly in the mid- to late-90s. Specifically, they have never been better than they were on The Bends, one of the most resonant and potent albums I own. It was all downhill from there, with OK Computer and In Rainbows the two successes among a bunch of oddball noise.

Song of the Day #223: ‘Just Friends’ – Amy Winehouse

amy_winehouseSticking with producer Mark Ronson, I’ve selected a song from his most celebrated album, Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black.

This was a perfect match of producer and artist, with Ronson’s gift for modernizing old jazz and big band sounds complementing Winehouse’s old-school vocal chops and decidedly contemporary image. I’m not familiar with Winehouse’s first album, but I’m guessing this is a case where a producer is integral to an album’s success.
