Song of the Day #1,308: ‘It Did’ – Brad Paisley

Brad Paisley, who had his own weekend series, has decided to make an appearance on Random Weekends.

Today’s song is from Paisley’s fifth album, 2008’s 5th Gear, and it is not a favorite of mine. That album, in general, represents something of a slump for Paisley, falling between his four best records — Mud On the Tracks and Time Well Wasted on the one side and American Saturday Night and This is Country Music on the other.

‘It Did’ is a kind of ugly bastard cousin of the wonderful ‘Then,’ another song that follows a couple through their lives remarking on how things just keep getting better. In fact, I see this song as a very rough draft that paved the way for that one.

Songs like this one — and Paisley has a few — are the reason I rank Miranda Lambert as my #1 country artist with Paisley right behind her.

A single red rose and a table for two
A nice chardonnay and an ocean view
Ships coming in and stars coming out
We sat and we talked til the place closed down
Then we took a long walk down on the beach
Her and that white dress and her bare feet
We stopped and we watched the light house light
I pulled her close and I held on tight
And I said to myself
It doesn’t get better than this
No it doesn’t get better than this

And it did, it did, oh it did

Fast forward to that next spring
We were looking for a preacher
Picking out rings
Family coming in and friends coming out
To that little white church on the outskirts of town
Me in that tux fighting butterflies
Tears of joy in my mama’s eyes
Her daddy walking her down the aisle
He lifted that veil and I saw that smile
And I said to myself
It doesn’t get better than this
No it doesn’t get better than this

But it did, it did, oh it did

Just when I start thinking it’s as good as it can get
This crazy life does something just to let me know
I haven’t seen anything yet

Nine months later nearly to the day
There we were flying down the interstate
Car weaving in, car weaving out
Through traffic running every red light in town
Delivery room and the doctor comes in
I’m right beside her she’s squeezing my hand
One more push and a baby cries
Sweet little angel with his mama’s eyes

And I said to myself
It doesn’t get better than this
No it doesn’t get better than this

But it did, it did, oh it did
Yes, it did

See, this is why I question whether Paisley is a great songwriter. He is, for sure, a great musician. This, however, is a paint by the numbers boring country song.

I think your random weekends theme should be modified such that, when a lame song comes up, you delete it from your iPod immediately after posting it:)

You’re suggesting that a great songwriter can’t write a lame song. I disagree. Great songwriters write lame songs all the time.

  3. Clay says:

Actually, I just checked the liner notes. Paisley didn’t write this song. So he’s off the hook!

But I suppose we can question his judgement for choosing to record it.

I’m suggesting that Paisley isn’t a great songwriter, and some of his songs illustrate the point, though, if he didn’t write this one, it doesn’t illustrate much of anything.
