John Legend might be a recent addition to the EGOT ranks, but I have never found him very engaging. He seems like a lovely man, but his music bores me.
His wife, model Chrissy Teigen, on the other hand, is a goddamn marvel. She is witty as hell, wielding her Twitter feed like a scalpel against the deplorables, and charmingly self-deprecating to boot.
I like John Legend as a man, a philanthropist and political activist. I like his voice and admire his musical talent.
But damn it if I’m not bored to tears by everything he’s recorded.
I think it’s just not my genre. I can’t think of any “adult contemporary R&B” artists (as AllMusic classifies him) who float my boat.
Here’s a nice song from John Legend’s 2004 album, Get Lifted. I can’t say much more about it than that.
I like Legend well enough through his many talk show and award show appearances, but I’ve never taken the time to listen to any of his music.
The next two weeks will feature the second installment of my “Keeping up With the Charts” series, wherein I post the songs topping the Billboard Hot 100 in an effort to keep up with what the kids are listening to these days.
This week, three of the top five songs are leftovers from the last time I did this, suggesting that the Hot 100 doesn’t see a whole lot of turnover.
