Song of the Day #3,244: ‘Warm Blood’ – Carly Rae Jepsen vs. Elvis Costello

The latest Montauk Madness Round One matchup features a prime contender for the whole title (Elvis Costello) vs. a newcomer with only a couple of albums under her belt (Carly Rae Jepsen). Not exactly a fair fight.

But Jepsen is a talent, no question. She might not be Rocky Balboa taking Apollo Creed to 15 rounds and losing by judge’s decision, but Costello is definitely in the other corner having taken a solid shot to the eye, nodding her way and saying “You have great things ahead of you, kid.”

Song of the Day #3,121: ‘Higher’ – Carly Rae Jepsen

carly_rae_jepsen_side_bLast year I officially became a Carly Rae Jepsen fanboy.

It didn’t start out that way. I first mentioned her on the blog back in August of 2012, when ‘Call Me Maybe’ was dominating the charts and she seemed destined to go down as a one-hit wonder. Hell, she might still go down as a one-hit wonder because for some inexplicable reason her subsequent releases haven’t caught on with a mass audience.

Song of the Day #3,034: ‘Body Language’ – Carly Rae Jepsen

carly_rae_jepsen_side_bOne area in which I’ve refused to go digital is magazine consumption. I download my music and read books on my tablet, but I can’t give up on a flimsy magazine that I can roll up, toss in my car to read at stoplights and stack by the dozens until I finally relent and dump them in the recycling bin.

I know that magazine tablet apps have come a long way and give you essentially the same reading experience, but I don’t want to make that leap. I’ll hang on to this one analog experience.

Song of the Day #3,002: ‘Cry’ – Carly Rae Jepsen

carly_rae_jepsen_side_bCarly Rae Jepsen went from a likely one-hit wonder (for 2012’s ‘Call Me Maybe’) to one of the most critically-acclaimed pop singer-songwriters working today.

Unfortunately, major sales didn’t follow, but I get the feeling Jepsen would rather be respected than rich. Still, I’m convinced that if Taylor Swift had released Jepsen’s 2015 album E*MO*TION instead of her own 1989, it would have been an even bigger smash.

‘Run Away With Me’ – Carly Rae Jepsen

One of my big surprises in reading a ton of year-end wrap ups was how often I saw Carly Rae Jepsen’s latest album, E•MO•TION, listed among the best records of 2015.

It’s not that I don’t consider Jepsen capable of greatness — ‘Call Me Maybe’ alone proves she has considerable hit-making chops — but I figured if she had released a monster pop album, it would have done monster business.
