Song of the Day #3,234: ‘Tin Man’ – Miranda Lambert vs. Bob Dylan

This is the Montauk madness first round matchup I’ve been dreading since I first peeked ahead at the random seedings.

It’s not that the decision between Miranda Lambert and Bob Dylan is ultimately all that difficult (Dylan gets my vote). I just hate to see Lambert exit so early. I adore this woman so much that she should be an Elite Eight or even Final Four contender, but the hand of fate will have her on the sidelines before the games have even begun.

Song of the Day #3,165: ‘All Along the Watchtower’ – Bob Dylan

john_wesley_hardingWhen the Random Weekend iTunes Fairy offers up a stone-cold classic by an artist I have covered exhaustively, I assume — after 3,164 Songs of the Day — it will be a repeat.

But somehow, despite spending a full year on Bob Dylan Weekends, I have never posted his version of ‘All Along the Watchtower.’

Song of the Day #3,081: ‘Sally Gal [Outtake]’ – Bob Dylan

no_direction_homeYou know the whole Bob Dylan bootleg thing has gotten out of control when I’m looking for a YouTube clip of today’s Random SOTD and I dig up at least four outtake versions, none of which appear to be the one I need.

Song of the Day #2,927: ‘Young At Heart’ – Bob Dylan

bob_dylan_fallen_angelsFallen Angels is the unlikeliest Bob Dylan album since the album he released a year earlier, Shadows in the Night. Both records are tours through the Great American Songbook, specifically standards once recorded by Frank Sinatra.

I call these albums unlikely, but the truth is Dylan fans know there’s no such thing. By now, the man has released music in every genre short of opera, and don’t be surprised if he announces his take on La Boheme for the Fall.

Song of the Day #2,918: ‘Sitting On Top of the World’ – Bob Dylan

goodasibeentoyouThe Random iTunes Fairy has served up Bob Dylan songs two weeks in a row, this one from Dylan’s 1992 album of folk covers, Good As I Been To You. The timing is good, as I’ll soon be blogging about Dylan’s latest covers album, this year’s Fallen Angels.

Though it didn’t seem like it at the time, Good As I Been To You was the beginning of a late-career comeback for Dylan. He followed it in ’93 with World Gone Wrong, a similar collection of traditional covers, and both records received acclaim. His next studio album, released four years later, was the classic Time Out of Mind.
