Song of the Day #1,106: ‘Run the World (Girls)’ – Beyoncé

You might have been wondering why I crowned a winner yesterday instead of waiting for the last day of my two-week summer song series.

Well, the final day (as it was last summer) is dedicated to Beyoncé. But her new single, ‘Run the World (Girls),’ is not strong enough to capture the title. So I dealt with that bit of housekeeping yesterday so I could end on the sweetest of all notes.

As for the song, I have to say it pretty much sucks. I haven’t liked what I’ve heard of Beyoncé’s new album, 4 — either the ballads or the dance tracks. Truth is, there are only four or five songs in her whole discography that I find worthy of repeat listens.

Song of the Day #1,005: ‘Flaws and All’ – Beyoncé

It’s been awhile since I’ve offered up a Beyoncé song. Two months, in fact, which is way too long.

‘Flaws and All’ is a track from her 2007 album B’day. Most of the songs I’ve heard from that album are beat-heavy dance tracks but this is a nice ballad tucked in between the thumpier stuff.

Every couple has “the list.” My wife’s contains George Clooney and Clive Owen and a few others who circulate in and out of the next few slots. I think the guy from Hawaii Five-O is probably camping out on there right now.

I have Beyoncé. She’s in slots one through four, and these days let’s say slot five goes to Amy Adams in The Fighter form. But mostly it’s just Beyoncé because, really, who else do you need?

Song of the Day #900: ‘Telephone’ – Lady Gaga featuring Beyoncé

Best Songs of 2010 – Honorable Mentions

Another week of honorable mentions before I get to the proper 2010 countdown next week.

I don’t buy into much of the fuss over Lady GaGa but she has released a few songs I enjoy. ‘Bad Romance’ and ‘Poker Face’ are tops among those, with ‘Just Dance’ as a runner-up.

This year she scored a hit with the single and video release of ‘Telephone,’ another club-ready dance anthem that proves you can write a song about anything so long as it’s supported by a good chorus and beat. This one is about not wanting to be interrupted by phone calls while at a club. As somebody who hates the telephone, I can relate.
