Continuing my look at the albums of 2005…
I was surprised to discover I’ve only featured one song from Spoon’s 2005 album Gimme Fiction to date, way back in 2008. This is one of those bands, and one of those albums, that I seldom think about but always enjoy.
Gimme Fiction was my introduction to the Austin-based indie band. It’s their fifth studio album and the first to make a wider splash, with today’s song finding some moderate success on radio.

Now that I’ve counted down my favorite albums of 2005, I’m turning my attention to other notable albums from that year. Some of these I know a little bit or a lot, some I didn’t know at all. Each of them made a splash commercially or critically and helped shape the popular music landscape that year.
I wrote about Madonna’s Confessions On a Dance Floor back when I did a deep dive of all of her albums. This one was Madonna’s last Platinum album in the U.S., and the last real triumph of her career.
The week of September 22, 1984, found John Waite atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Missing You.’ A few weeks ago I wrote about that song and mentioned that it was the only 1984 chart-topper to spent just one week at #1. This was that week.
Right on its heels was Prince’s ‘Let’s Go Crazy,’ a week away from its own berth at #1, where it would spend two weeks. This was Prince’s second #1 hit, following ‘When Doves Cry’ a few weeks earlier.
Throwing back to the week of September 21, 1974, we find Barry White atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe,’ a soul classic that I wrote about when covering the albums of 1974.
In the #2 spot was ‘Rock Me Gently’ by Canadian singer-songwriter Andy Kim. The song eventually hit #1 and was Kim’s only chart-topper in the U.S., though his ‘Baby, I Love You’ had reached #9 five years earlier.

#1 – Nashville – Josh Rouse
Two years ago I was all set to name this album my #1 of 2004 when I realized I had mis-dated it. I ended up posting Taylor Swift’s latest single as a placeholder instead.
Well, during that time I made it through ’75, ’85, and ’95, and now I’m back to finally sing the praises of Josh Rouse’s Nashville — the best album of this or pretty much any year.
Meet Me In Montauk
