Today we have one of those strange coincidences that crop up every once in awhile when posting on Random Weekends.
Exactly eight days ago, I featured a random song from Pernice Brothers’ 2001 album The World Won’t End. And here we are again with a second track from the same batch of 11 songs, an unlikely result given the 13,117 other possible tracks that aren’t on that album.
‘Rental Car’ is the penultimate track on Beck’s 2005 album Guero, a critical and commercial hit that continued a streak of stellar releases dating back to Mellow Gold in 1994.
That 11-year span saw the release of seven albums swinging between the kaleidoscopic alt-rock buzzsaw Odelay and the melancholy sobfest Sea Change. Guero falls a lot closer to the Odelay side, in large part because Beck reunited with the producing team The Dust Brothers.
The third most deserving act not currently in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, is King Crimson.
This is another band that has never been featured on the blog. I’ve mentioned them exactly once, in a post about ‘Heat of the Moment’ by Asia, a band made up of former members of other prog rock groups (bassist/vocalist John Wetton made the jump from King Crimson to Asia).
Number five on the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s list of egregious Rock & Roll Hall of Fame snubs is Carole King, who finally made the cut this year.
In the sixth spot is Judas Priest, a band with which I am so unfamiliar that today’s post is the first time the words “Judas Priest” have appeared on the blog in more than 13 years. Shows you how much of a heavy metal guy I am.
To round out the third week of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame posts, I’m going to feature songs from three acts that have so far gone un-inducted.
In 2018, the Cleveland Plain Dealer compiled an ordered list of the 100 artists most egregiously overlooked by the Hall. In the three years since, six of their top 10 have been inducted, so either they had some sway, or they have their finger on the pulse of the nominating committee.
