Austrian artist Falco owned the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 the week of April 12, 1986, with ‘Rock Me Amadeus,’ one of only nine non-English songs to top the chart.
At #2 was Prince with his iconic hit ‘Kiss,’ which would reach #1 the following week and stay there for two weeks. ‘Kiss’ is the third of five chart-topping hits for Prince, all released between 1984 and 1991.
‘Kiss’ was the lead single of Prince’s eighth studio album, Parade, the soundtrack album for his film Under the Cherry Moon. While the film flopped, the album did quite well, largely due to the success of this song.
The classic track might not have been on any Prince album if things had gone as he initially planned. He gave a rough demo of the track to a funk band called Mazarati working in an adjacent studio. But after hearing their early version, he decided to take it back and give it the treatment we all know and love.
