Song of the Day #6,369: ‘Love and Marriage’ – Frank Sinatra

There wasn’t a lot of movement atop the Billboard chart in the waning weeks of 1955. The top six songs the week of December 13, 1955, were all repeats.

At #7 that week was a track by Frank Sinatra that had been kicking around the top ten for a few weeks: ‘Love and Marriage.’ Written by Jimmy Van Heusen, the song was performed by Sinatra in a televised musical adaptation of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, in which Sinatra starred alongside Paul Newman and Eva Marie Saint.

This recording appeared on Sinatra’s 1956 album This is Sinatra, a collection of singles and B-sides. I’ve long kicked around the idea of doing a Sinatra deep dive, but the man was frighteningly prolific. He recorded 59 studio albums and more than a hundred soundtrack, compilation, and live records. Maybe I’ll cull that 59 down to 20 and do a not-so-shallow shallow dive.

As for ‘Love and Marriage,’ Gen X’ers probably know this song best as the theme to the sitcom Married… With Children, which ran from 1987-97.

[Verse 1]
Love and marriage, love and marriage
Go together like a horse and carriage
This I tell ya, brother
Ya can’t have one without the other

[Verse 2]
Love and marriage, love and marriage
It’s an institute you can’t disparage
Ask the local gentry
And they will say it’s elementary

[Bridge]
Try, try, try to separate them
It’s an illusion
Try, try, try, and you will only come
To this conclusion

[Verse 3]
Love and marriage, love and marriage
Go together like a horse and carriage
Dad was told by mother
You can’t have one, you can’t have none
You can’t have one without the other

[Bridge]
Try, try, try to separate them
It’s an illusion
Try, try, try, and you will only come
To this conclusion

[Verse 3]
Love and marriage, love and marriage
Go together like a horse and carriage
Dad was told by mother
You can’t have one (You can’t have none)
You can’t have one without the other

With all due respect to Sinatra fans, I’ve just never liked this song. I’m sure, however, some of your loyal readers would love a not-so-shallow dive into Sinatra’s music.

  2. Peg says:

Definitely a Sinatra fan but this isn’t one of my favorites although it certainly is fitting for the other Sinatra fan in the house since we are very close to 60 years of “Love and Marriage “ ❤️ Also we would love a not-so-shallow dive into his music!

  3. Robert Butler says:

For those of us whose “formative years” were in the 60’s, this melody will forever be associated with Campbell’s soup. You’re welcome!
