I’m intrigued by the idea of adapting a book about musicians to the big or small screen and having to write music that has only been described in words. The best recent example I have is the miniseries Daisy Jones & The Six.
The book of the same title, written by Taylor Jenkins Reid, tells the story of the struggles and successes of a 1970s band. The complicated relationship of the band’s leaders, played by Riley Keough and Sam Claflin in the series, was inspired by the romance of Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham during Fleetwood Mac’s heyday.
Reid’s book includes the lyrics of the band’s songs, but not being a musician she said she had no real idea of how they might sound set to music. That task fell to singer-songwriter Blake Mills, who composed nearly all of the tracks heard in the show. Keough and Claflin handled their characters’ vocals (as Elvis Presley’s granddaughter, Keough has the genes for it).
The result is a strong set of 70s-style rock songs, and I imagine a neat experience for people who read the book and only imagined hearing them.
I don’t know who I am
Baby, baby, baby
Do you know who you are?
Is it out of our hands?
Tell me, tell me, tell me
How we made it this far
[Pre-Chorus]
Did we unravel a long time ago?
Is there too much we don’t wanna know?
I wish it was easy, but it isn’t so
[Chorus]
Oh, we could make a good thing bad
Oh, we could make a good thing bad
[Verse 2]
Now, where do we stand?
Baby, baby, baby
No one knows who you are, mm
And if this was your plan
Tell me, tell me why
You’ve been cryin’ in the dark
[Pre-Chorus]
We unraveled a long time ago
We lost and we couldn’t let it go
I wish it was easy, but it isn’t so
So, baby
[Chorus]
Oh, we could make a good thing bad
Oh, we could makе a good thing bad
Oh, we could make a good thing bad
Oh, we could makе a good thing bad
[Bridge]
How did we get here? How do we get out?
We used to be somethin’ to see
Oh, baby, look at us now
Oh, baby, look at us now
This thing we’ve been doin’ ain’t workin’ out
Why can’t you just admit it to me?
Oh, baby, look at us now
Oh, baby, look at us now
Oh, baby, look at us now
Oh, baby, look at us now
Oh, baby, look at us now
How did we get here? How do we get out?
This thing we’ve been doin’ ain’t workin’ out
Oh, how did we get here? How do we get out?
We used to be something to see
Oh, baby, look at us now
Baby, look at us now
This thing we’ve been doin’ ain’t workin’ out
Why can’t you just admit it to me?
Oh, baby, look at us now
Baby, look at us now
How did we get here? How do we get out?
We used to be something to see
Oh, baby, look at us now
Baby, look at us now
This thing we’ve been doin’ ain’t workin’ out
Why can’t you just admit it to me?
Oh, baby, look at us now
Baby, look at us now
[Chorus]
Oh, we could make a good thing bad
Oh, we could make a good thing bad
Given how few TV series you watch, I’m surprised this was on your radar, though it is an interesting subject matter.
Oh, I didn’t watch it, but my daughters did so I heard about it through them.
That is so cool
