My apologies to daily commenter Dana, who thought he dodged a bullet when this song’s Throwback Weekend feature was passed up for a special 6,000th Song of the Day post a couple of weeks ago.
But no, Duran Duran’s ‘The Wild Boys’ was still at #2 on the Hot 100 the week of December 22, 1984. It sat behind Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin,’ which has already been covered on the blog.
Dana will be happy to know that the English rockers never reached the #1 spot with this song, thanks to Madonna and Hall & Oates, whose ‘Out of Touch’ also relegated ‘The Wild Boys’ to #2.
The band’s only U.S. #1s were 1984’s ‘The Reflex’ and 1985’s ‘A View to a Kill,’ though they had six other top five hits. My personal favorite, ‘Save a Prayer,’ didn’t chart in the States.
Wild boys, wild boys, wild boys
Wild boys
Wild! Boys!
[Verse 1]
The wild boys are calling
On their way back from the fire
In august moon’s surrender to
A dust cloud on the rise
Wild boys fallen far from glory
Reckless and so hungered
On the razors edge you trail
Because there’s murder by the roadside
In a sore afraid new world
[Pre-Chorus]
They tried to break us
Looks like they’ll try again
[Chorus]
Wild boys never lose it
Wild boys never chose this way
Wild boys never close your eyes
Wild boys always shine
[Verse 2]
You got sirens for a welcome
There’s bloodstain for your pain
And your telephone been ringing while
You’re dancing in the rain
Wild boys wonder where is glory
Where is all you angels
Now the figureheads have fell
And lovers war with arrows over
Secrets they could tell
Pre-Chorus
They tried to tame you
Looks like they’ll try again
[Chorus]
Wild boys never lose it
Wild boys never chose this way
Wild boys never close your eyes
Wild boys always shine
[Refrain]
Wild boys, wild boys, wild boys
Wild boys, wild boys, wild boys
[Chorus]
Wild boys never lose it
Wild boys never chose this way
Wild boys never close your eyes
Wild boys always
[Chorus ]
Wild boys never lose it
Wild boys never chose this way
Wild boys never close your eyes
Wild boys always
[Outro-Chorus ]
Wild boys never lose it
Wild boys never chose this way
Wild boys never close your eyes
Wild boys always, wild boys
Ugh! I’m also not a big fan of “The Reflex” with its annoying pre-chorus (“Whhhhyyyyy don’t you…. STOP WHINING!”) Fortunately, that song charted earlier in 1984, so you will not need to feature it.😉
