Throwing back to the week of February 19, 1994, we find Celine Dion atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘The Power of Love,’ a cover of Jennifer Rush’s hit from a decade before.
Rush co-wrote the song and released it on her eponymous 1984 debut. It was a minor hit in the U.S. but tore up the charts in the UK, becoming that regions biggest single of the year and ninth-biggest of the decade.
Air Supply covered the song a year later, gender-swapping the lyrics (“you are my lady and I am your man”). Notably, that’s the same year Huey Lewis & the News released their own (very different) ‘The Power of Love,’ which went to #1 on the Hot 100. Air Supply’s song peaked at #68.
Laura Branigan tried her hand at the song in 1987 and fared a bit better, reaching #26 on the Billboard chart.
But it took Celine Dion to push this romantic ballad to #1 in the States. Recorded for her third English-language album, the song spent four weeks at #1, giving Dion her first chart-topper in the U.S.
