Throwing back to the week of August 24, 1963, we find a pre-teen Stevie Wonder (then billed as Little Stevie Wonder) atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Fingertips – Pt 2,’ the B-side of the first single from his album The 12 Year Old Genius – Recorded Live.
The full ‘Fingertips’ is an instrumental jazz track that was split across two sides for release. It was the second half of the performance, when Wonder was called back onstage for an encore after a rousing bit of harmonica playing, that rocketed up the charts, giving Wonder his first #1 hit.
‘Fingertips – Pt 2’ spent three weeks at #1 and 12 weeks on the Hot 100 overall. That’s quite the feat for what amounts to a few minutes of improvisational jamming — not the sort of thing you expect to top the charts.
This single made Wonder the youngest artist to ever land a #1 on the Hot 100, a chart that was pretty young itself at the time. It’s a record Wonder has held on to in the 60 years since.
Say yeah. (Yeah!)
Say yeah. (Yeah!)
Yeah. (Yeah!)
Yeah, yeah, yeah
(Harmonica solo; band playing)
Just a little bit of so-o-o-o-o-o-o-oul
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Clap your hands just a little bit louder
Clap your hands just a little bit louder
(Harmonica solo continues)
(Band playing)
I know that everybody had, yeah, everybody had a good time
So if you want me to, if you want me to
I’m gonna swing a song, yeah, just one more time when I come back
Just one more time when I come back, so goodbye
(Harmonica solo; band plays finale)
HOST: How about it? Let’s hear it for him, alright
Little Stevie Wonder. Take a bow, Stevie
(Cheers and applause)
(Harmonica solo; piano plays; band playing)
Hey!
Come on. Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
I’m gonna go, yeah. I’m gonna go, yeah
So let’s just swing it one more time
(Harmonica plays final notes)
HOST: How about it? Go ahead and shake this up for me real good!
Stevie Wonder!
(Cheers and applause)
I’ve heard about the title “Fingertips” but had never actually heard the song before or the story behind it. So cool!
