Song of the Day #5,507: ‘John I Love You’ – Sinéad O’Connor

Sinéad O’Connor’s fourth studio album came on the heels of her disappointing third effort and the firestorm of controversy surrounding her pope-bashing Saturday Night Live appearance. And while 1994’s Universal Mother didn’t do well enough commercially to make it a proper comeback, it was certainly an artistic triumph.

A subdued and intimate collection of mostly piano-based ballads, Universal Mother was O’Connor’s most personal album to date. As she told the music magazine Mojo, the album “was the first attempt to try to expose what was really underneath a lot of the anger of the other records.”

That meant songs about her son, her abusive mother, former lovers, and Irish politics. Today’s song is about her friend and piano teacher, on whom she had an unrequited crush.

The album’s two covers are highlights. First up is a delicate version of Nirvana’s ‘All Apologies,’ followed by a sweeping take on Phil Coulter’s ‘Scorn Not His Simplicity,’ a song he wrote for his son, who has Down Syndrome.

Beautiful work, all of it, and the album that hits hardest in light of O’Connor’s passing.

[Verse 1]
John, I love you
I’m ever so fond of you
Will you wait for me
Till I am heavenly
Oh there’s much work to do
But I love you

[Refrain]
Oh you’re tender
Your name’s a whisper

[Verse 2]
I let tears fall like rain
Apple-sized they were
All over her
And through all of those times
When you could have died
This is what you find

[Chorus]
There’s life outside your mother’s garden
There’s life beyond your wildest dreams
There hasn’t been any explosion
We’re not spinning like Dorothy
If you look now then you’ll see why
Don’t be afraid to cry
This time don’t let yourself fly
Child
Pick up those dancing shoes
Kick off those wedding blues
These are the ways
You can choose

[Refrain]
Child, you’re tender
Your name’s a whisper

[Chorus]
There’s life outside your mother’s garden
There’s life beyond your wildest dreams
There hasn’t been any explosion
We’re not spinning like Dorothy
And if you look now then you’ll see why
Don’t be afraid to cry
This time don’t let yourself fly
Child
Pick up those dancing shoes
Kick off those wedding blues
These are the ways
You can choose

[Outro]
Child, I love you
I’m ever so fond of you

  1. Dana Gallup says:

It seems like the song transitions to being about her son, no?

Anyway, as I’ve said before, I was pretty checked out of music in the 90s, and so this album was completely off my radar. Seems like one I should give a listen to though.

I read that many fans interpreted the song as about her son, but she insisted it was about this other guy.

Interesting I thought it was about her son as I was reading the lyrics 😢
