Song of the Day #5,498: ‘We Belong’ – Pat Benatar

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has had a spotty reputation when it comes to inducting women. Only 25 solo women have been inducted into the Hall as performers since its 1986 inception. The Hall has been making up for that oversight in recent years, with 10 of those coming in the last five years.

Last year saw the induction of Pat Benatar, the artist responsible for such hits as ‘Love is a Battlefield,’ ‘Hit Me with Your Best Shot,’ and ‘We Belong.’ Interestingly, Benatar was added to the Hall alongside her longtime husband and guitarist, Neil Giraldo, so she may not qualify as a “solo” inductee even though all of her albums were released under her name alone.

Benatar has been eligible for the Hall since 2000 and was nominated once before, in 2020, before making the cut last year. Her bona fides include four Grammys, seven platinum or multi-platinum albums, and 15 Top 40 hits. Those are more impressive stats than I would have predicted, and ones that should earn her a spot in the Hall.

[Intro]
We belong, we belong to the light

[Verse 1]
Many times, I tried to tell you
Many times, I cried alone
Always I’m surprised how well you
Cut my feelings to the bone
Don’t wanna leave you really
I’ve invested too much time
To give you up that easy
To the doubts that complicate your mind

[Chorus]
We belong to the light, we belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words, we’ve both fallen under
Whatever we deny or embrace, for worse or for better
We belong, we belong, we belong together

[Verse 2]
Maybe it’s a sign of weakness
When I don’t know what to say
Maybe I just wouldn’t know
What to do with my strength anyway
Have we become a habit?
Do we distort the facts?
Now, there’s no looking forward
Now, there’s no turning back
When you say

[Chorus]
We belong to the light, we belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words, we’ve both fallen under
Whatever we deny or embrace, for worse or for better
We belong, we belong, we belong together

[Verse 3]
Close your eyes and try to sleep now
Close your eyes and try to dream
Clear your mind and do your best
To try and wash the palette clean
We can’t begin to know it
How much we really care
I hear your voice inside me
I see your face everywhere, still you say

[Chorus]
We belong to the light, we belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words, we’ve both fallen under
Whatever we deny or embrace, for worse or for better
We belong, we belong, we belong together
We belong to the light, we belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words, we’ve both fallen under
Whatever we deny or embrace, for worse or for better
We belong, we belong, we belong together

[Outro]
We belong to the light, we belong to the thunder

  1. Dana Gallup says:

It is odd that Neil Giraldo was admitted with Benatar. I wonder what’s up with that? Regardless, I agree that Benatar deserves to be in the Hall.

  2. Peg says:

Speaking of worthiness in the Hall Frank Sinatra has never been inducted right????

  3. Russ Paris says:

You should also mention that “We Belong” was written by Lowen & Navarro, a truly wonderful duo in their own right.
