Our next inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2023 class is Los Angeles rap metal band Rage Against the Machine.
My knowledge and appreciation for Rage Against the Machine can be summed up by the fact that this is the first of their songs to show up on the blog through nearly 5,500 Songs of the Day. Hard rock/heavy metal just isn’t my genre, no matter how potent the message behind it.
Rage was first eligible for the Hall in 2018, and was nominated every year but 2020 before making the cut this year.
I was surprised to learn that the band’s discography consists of just four studio albums released between 1992 and 2000. I was also surprised to learn that all of those albums went platinum, and the first three multi-platinum, given that I couldn’t name a single one of their songs.
I’m more familiar with the band’s outspoken activism, which they broadcast through both their music and in promotional appearances. Those political stances set them apart from other metal bands and probably played a key role in their inclusion in the Hall of Fame.
