Song of the Day #4,698: ‘Drunk and Hot Girls’ – Kanye West

I stopped finding Kanye West interesting about ten years ago. Even then, it was his music, not his persona, I found worthy of my time. Now, it’s neither.

But 2010’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a deserved classic. And the quartet of albums that preceded it are all good to great. That includes 2007’s Graduation, on which today’s random weekend selection appears.

West’s ode to pursuing drunk and hot girls drew its inspiration from a song on Can’s 1972 album Ege Bamyasi. The German experimental rock band’s song ‘Sing Swan Song‘ provided the melody for this chorus, and a reference to “a drunken hot ghost” was twisted into the poetry you find below.

[Hook: Kanye West]
We go through too much bullshit
Just to mess with these drunk and hot girls
We go through too much bullshit
Just to mess with these drunk and hot girls
We go
Through too
Much shit
To mess
Mess with
These drunk
All of these drunk and hot girls

[Verse 1: Kanye West]
Driving around town looking for the best spot
For the drunk and hot girls
Up in the club look at here what we got
Some drunk and hot girls
Stop dancing with your girlfriend and come dance with me
Stop talking ’bout your boyfriend since he is not me
Stop running up my tab ’cause these drinks is not free
You drunk and hot girl
[Hook: Kanye West]
We go through too much bullshit
Just to mess with these drunk and hot girls
We go through too much bullshit
Just to mess with these drunk and hot girls
We go
Through too
Much shit
To mess
Mess with
These drunk
All of these drunk and hot girls

[Verse 2: Kanye West]
I don’t want to drop your friends off, I just want you
You drunk and hot girl
You want to sit down but we hit the drive-thru
You drunk and hot girl
Please don’t fall asleep, baby, we almost back
Please don’t throw up in the car, we almost crashed
Oh, now you sober, how’d I know you’d say that
You drunk and hot girl

[Hook: Kanye West]
We go through too much bullshit
Just to mess with these drunk and hot girls
We go through too much bullshit
Just to mess with these drunk and hot girls
We go
Through too
Much shit
To mess
Mess with
These drunk
All of these drunk and hot girls
[Bridge: Mos Def]
Love the dangerous necessity that people seek
Without regard to where they are
The human heart is curious
Above all things, love, the lights are low, your eyes are bright
The music plays, it’s sweet delight
It’s out of sight, I’m feeling right
Your dress is tight
Oh how, I want you right now

[Verse 3: Kanye West with Mos Def]
Don’t tell me, you sing, you about to get a deal
You drunk and hot girl
“Ah da da da da,” That’s how the fuck you sound
You drunk and hot girl, yeah
You only live once, do whatever you like
I thought I’d be with you for only one night
Now I’m with this girl for the rest of my life
That drunk and hot girl

[Hook: Kanye West with Mos Def]
We go through too much bullshit just to mess with these drunk and hot girls
(A little sippy sippy)
We gonna through too much bullshit just to mess with these drunk and hot girls
(Did she say she want a brewski?)
We go
Through too
Much shit
To mess
Mess with
These drunk
All of these drunk and hot girls

Ugh, give me the most didactic of political songs by Jackson Browne over this!

One of the things I never expected when I went up to college was that I’d become an avid Kanye fan. Obviously, I grew up with a family that absolutely detested his public persona (most specifically, what he did to Taylor Swift) and from the very little I’d heard from his music I saw no need to do a deeper dive.

That all changed when I met one of my best friends and roommates up there who has immaculate music taste and swears that Kanye is the greatest artist of all time. Given his deep appreciation for Dave Matthew’s Band and Bruce Springsteen I didn’t think this was a man whose opinion I could just ignore. I’ve now listened to every Kanye album (many multiple times) and it’s safe to say I’m a pretty big fan.

I’m not here for the extracurriculars. I still think that he is an ass and he hasn’t made many efforts to walk back any of his worst moments. That being said I understand the many hardcore rap fans who feel the music outweigh the actions of the man behind it. Funnily enough this is the one song on “Graduation” that does little to nothing from me. In my reviewing of this album which has become one of my favorites, this is always the track that I wish would have been left off or replaced. There’s a song Kanye did with John Mayer as a bonus track for the Japanese CD that is infinitely better. I will link that below. Although I love the bridge of the song, the rest ends up being very droney and even Kid Cudi’s melodious vocals and Kanye’s clever wordplay can’t save this song.

Here is the John Mayer and Kanye West collab. I wish this song was on streaming platforms as it’s one of my favorites. I’d be happy to have conversations about any of your old Kanye favorites as well as try and highlight some of the better tracks from his newer discography. I won’t try and convince you on “Jesus is King”, but “The Life of Pablo” is arguably one of his best albums.

I like this one. I read that it was recorded for Late Registration, which definitely makes sense given the song’s sound. Late Registration is my favorite of Kanye’s early albums, thought MBDTF is probably my favorite overall. I suppose I should give the post-MBDTF albums a chance. I avoided them more because of his personality than then music, to be honest.

Maybe that’s the next deep dive! 🙂
