Song of the Day #3,172: ‘Gimme Some Truth’ – John Lennon

john_lennon_imagineJohn Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ (the song) is such a classic that it’s easy to overlook how great Imagine (the album) is, too.

In addition to the iconic title song, you have ‘Jealous Guy,’ ‘Oh Yoko,’ ‘Crippled Inside’ as well as the lesser-known ‘It’s So Hard,’ ‘I Don’t Want to Be a Soldier,’ ‘Oh My Love,’ ‘How?’ and ‘How Do You Sleep?’ That last one is a scathing takedown of Paul McCartney (“those freaks was right when they said you was dead”), which Genius.com calls one of the “first diss tracks” in pop music.

‘Gimme Some Truth’ is a similarly hard-edged track and another highlight. George Harrison contributes the appropriately Beatles-esque guitar solo.

[Verse 1]
I’m sick and tired of hearing things
From uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocritics

[Chorus 1]
All I want is the truth
Just give me some truth

[Verse 2]
I’ve had enough of reading things
By neurotic, psychotic, pig-headed politicians

[Chorus 1]
All I want is the truth
Just give me some truth

[Chorus 2]
No short-haired, yellow-bellied, son of Tricky Dicky
Is going to mother hubbard soft soap me
With just a pocketful of hope
Money for dope
Money for rope
Oooh oh

No short-haired, yellow-bellied, son of Tricky Dicky
Is going to mother hubbard soft soap me
With just a pocketful of hope
Money for dope
Money for rope

[Verse 3]
I’m sick to death of seeing things
From tight-lipped, condescending, mama’s little chauvinists

[Chorus 1]
All I want is the truth
Just give me some truth

[Verse 4]
I’ve had enough of watching scenes
With schizophrenic, egocentric, paranoiac, prima-donnas

[Chorus 1]
All I want is the truth, now, now
Just give me some truth

[Chorus 3]
No short-haired, yellow-bellied, son of Tricky Dicky
Is going to mother hubbard soft soap me
With just a pocketful of hope
It’s money for dope
Money for rope

[Verse 1]
I’m sick to death of hearing things
From uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocrites

[Chorus 1]
All I want is the truth, now
Just give me some truth, now

[Verse 2]
I’ve had enough of reading things
By neurotic, psychotic, pig-headed politicians

[Chorus 1]
All I want is the truth, now
Just give me some truth, now
All I want is the truth, now
Just give me some truth, now
All I want is the truth
Just give me some truth
All I want is the truth
Just give me some truth
All I want is the truth

These lyrics resonate just as much today given our current so called president as they did when Nixon was president. Sad!

While in New York recently, we visited Strawberry Fields. As an acoustic guitarist was singing Beatles songs on a park bench, I stared at the memorial with that one simple word, “Imagine,” then glanced at the.corner of the Dakota building where Lennon was killed, and I wondered how our world might be right now if Lennon were here. Perhaps his sage words and songs would have persuaded enough white baby boomers to change their votes so that we would now have our first liberal woman president instead of this baffoon who is the antithesis of all Lennon stood for. Imagine!
