Garbage has a muscular industrial sound that could be accurately described as hard rock with an electronic flavor. They’re not exactly balladeers.
But the band has a tradition of ending each album with a slow, usually sad, song. On 2001’s Beautiful Garbage, the band’s third album, that song was ‘So Like a Rose.’
‘So Like a Rose’ is about a young man contemplating (and probably attempting) suicide. For most of its running time, the song is as minimalist as Garbage gets, with Shirley Manson whispering her vocals over a muted electric guitar riff.
Baby thinks he’s dying
Lost inside his bedroom
Mommy won’t stop crying
And daddy’s always working
[Chorus 1]
There’s no going back
There’s no going back
There’s no going back
On this one
[Verse 2]
Baby wakes up with the sun
While everyone is sleeping
He thinks he’s going crazy
This could be the big one
[Chorus 2]
There’s no going back
There’s no going back
There’s no going back
[Verse 3]
Sleeping with ghosts
It’s such a lonely experience
The stars are out tonight
Only they can hear you breathing
[Chorus 3]
You’re so like a rose
You’re so like a rose
You’re so like a rose
I wish you could stay here
Whenever Garbage comes up on your blog, I always cringe as I am not a fan of their sound. This, however, was a pleasant change up (as pleasant as a song based on suicide can be). This Is reminiscent of R.E.M.
