When this track from Garbage’s 1985 debut popped up as today’s Random iTunes Selection, I was positive I’d featured it on the blog before. I almost skipped to the next track without checking.
Turns out I was half right. I did feature the song, but not the studio version. Rather, I blogged about the live MTV Video Awards performance during a week on singers I find sexy. Having watched that performance again just now, I can confirm that I still find Shirley Manson sexy.
Garbage’s first two albums perfectly capture the 90s alternative scene for me. I wasn’t crazy about everything that came out during that time, but I sure was crazy about this.
They kept the streak going for a few more years before going on hiatus, then returning just a couple of years ago with a largely forgettable comeback record. Some artists are just meant for one time and place.
I’m only happy when it rains
I’m only happy when it’s complicated
And though I know you can’t appreciate it
I’m only happy when it rains
You know I love it when the news is bad
And why it feels so good to feel so sad
I’m only happy when it rains
[Chorus]:
Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me
Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me
[Verse 2]:
I’m only happy when it rains
I feel good when things are going wrong
I only listen to the sad, sad songs
I’m only happy when it rains
[Verse 3]:
I only smile in the dark
My only comfort is the night gone black
I didn’t accidentally tell you that
I’m only happy when it rains
You’ll get the message by the time I’m through
When I complain about me and you
I’m only happy when it rains
[Chorus]:
Pour your misery down
(Pour your misery down)
Pour your misery down on me
[Bridge]:
You can keep me company
As long as you don’t care
[Verse 4]:
I’m only happy when it rains
You wanna hear about my new obsession?
I’m riding high upon a deep depression
I’m only happy when it rains
[Outro]:
(Pour some misery down on me)
I’m only happy when it rains
Like the studio version better than the live one.
