Guster is one of those bands that lives off of my radar until I hear one of their songs, and then I wonder why I don’t listen to them way more often than I do.
When the title ‘Red Oyster Cult’ first popped up as today’s Random Weekend selection, I had no idea what to expect. I’ve heard and enjoyed the album Keep it Together many times, but not closely enough to know the song titles.
Once it started, I knew exactly what it was — one of my favorite songs on the record. But it’s a record I haven’t listened to in a couple of years.
I guess you can chalk this one up to a recurring theme on this blog… so much music, so little time.
So many lights and sounds
Call your mom on the telephone
Tell her you’re coming home
Tell her there’s not a chance
You’re ever going to change the world
If you want to be free, take a sip of this tea
Join the red oyster cult
If you drink the whole cup, you will never grow up
You will never grow old
Remember when you were 14
You’d paint every picture so green
Call your mom on the telephone
Tell her your muse is gone
Tell her there’s not a chance
You’re ever going to change the world
Just a few drops away, you’ll never want to change the world
If you want to be free, take a sip of this tea
Join the red oyster cult
If you drink the whole cup, you will never grow up
You will never grow old
Call your mom on the telephone
Tell her you’re coming home
Tell her there’s not a chance you’re ever going to change the world
Just a few drops away
You’ll never have to change
Well, I owe my introduction to Guster to you, but I also have a similar experience with them as you describe. I like what I hear when I hear them, but i don’t focus on listening to their material the way I do others like Folds, Costello, etc. I suppose my appreciation for Guster is displayed by the the fact that, when their songs pop up on my shuffled iTunes collection, I leave the song on and enjoy what I am hearing.
