Holding the #8 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 is Meghan Trainor with ‘Lips are Movin.’ It was her call to leave off the ‘G.’
This gives Trainor two songs in the top eight, quite the accomplishment for a woman who was completely unknown at this time last year.
Now she’s one of the biggest pop stars in the world. Wonder if that will still be true a year from now.
I was ready to dismiss this song before hearing it, but goddamn it if it isn’t catchy as hell. I had the same experience with ‘All About That Bass,’ which has enough solid structure behind its inanity to make it utterly listenable.
Trainor is like a time traveler who either came here from the 50s or went to the 50s from here, I’m not sure which. Her casually modern outlook on relationships and sexuality blend oddly well with the doo-wop vibe of her music.
I’m very curious to see where she goes from here.
If your lips are movin, If your lips are movin
If your lips are movin, then you’re lyin’, lyin’, lyin’, baby
If your lips are movin, If your lips are movin
If your lips are movin, I said you’re lyin’, lyin’, lyin’, baby
[Verse 1]
Boy, look at me in my face
Tell me that you’re not just about this bass
You really think I could be replaced
Nah, I come from outer space
And I’m a classy girl, I’mma hold it up
You’re full of something but it ain’t love
And what we got, straight overdue
Go find somebody new
[Pre-Chorus]
You can buy me diamond earrings and deny-ny-ny, ny-ny-ny, deny-ny
But I smell her on your collar so goodbye-bye-bye, bye-bye-bye
[Chorus]
I know you’re lyin’
Cause your lips are movin’
Tell me do you think I’m dumb?
I might be young, but I ain’t stupid
Talking around in circles with your tongue
I gave you bass, You gave me sweet talk
Saying how I’m your number one
But I know you lie
Cause your lips are movin
Baby don’t you know I’m done?
[Break]
[Verse 2]
Hey baby don’t you bring them tears
Cause it’s too late, too late baby
You only love me when you’re here
You’re so two-faced, two-faced babe
[Pre-Chorus] + [Chorus]
[Break] + [Chorus]
I’m glad to see you are coming around on Meghan. I unabashedly love “All About That Bass” and I find this song fresh and fun as well. I think she is drawing more from the 60’s than 50’s. Regardless, she is like a lightweight version of Amy Winehouse without the depth, darkness or depression.
I have no idea if she will end up being a one album wonder, but I hope she isn’t. Pop music could use far more of her.
I’m loving her sound, that’s for sure!
Meghan Trainor is amazing. That’s all.
