Song of the Day #2,097: ‘Timber’ – Pitbull feat. Ke$ha

pitbull_timberI was prepared to dislike ‘Timber,’ the #11 Billboard hit by Pitbull. I’ve never understood the appeal of Pitbull, though I can’t say I’ve tried very hard to do so.

But this is actually a pretty catchy, though lyrically obnoxious, song. The hoe-down spirit, driven by some inspired harmonica playing, mashes up well with the hip-hop party vibe.

I have to admit I’m a little let down to see that Ke$ha (or is it Kesha now?) transformed her rather ordinary (read: normal) appearance into more of a video babe cliche. I thought her general lack of polish — and magazine-ready abs — was one of her few charms.

[Hook: Ke$ha]
It’s going down, I’m yelling timber
You better move, you better dance
Let’s make a night you won’t remember
I’ll be the one you won’t forget

[Verse 1: Pitbull]
The bigger they are, the harder they fall
This biggity boy’s a diggity dog
I have ‘em like Miley Cyrus, clothes off
Twerking in their bras and thongs, timber
Face down, booty up, timber
That’s the way we like the what, timber
I’m slicker than an oil spill
She say she won’t, but I bet she will, timber

[Bridge x2: Pitbull]
Swing your partner round and round
End of the night, it’s going down
One more shot, another round
End of the night, it’s going down

[Hook]

[Verse 2: Pitbull]
Look up in the sky, it’s a bird, it’s a plane
Nah, it’s just me, ain’t a damn thing changed
Live in hotels, swing on planes
Blessed to say, money ain’t a thing
Club jumping like Lebron, now Voli
Order me another round, homie
We about to climb, wild, ‘cause it’s about to go down

[Bridge]

[Hook](2x)

  1. Amy says:

The first time Pitbull was really on my radar was when he was one of a handful of celebrities/politicians making an appearance at an Obama rally here a few years ago. I don’t think I’d ever seen him before, so I was intrigued to by the bald white man that was exciting the young folk in the crowd. I do like this song; it’s fun.

Well, Amy, he’s not Eminem white, but certainly light skinned.

I too must admit that, while was not too familiar with Pitbull’s music and was predisposed to think I wouldn’t like it, probably based solely on his name, I do find this song rather infectious. While I have come to despise pop songs with the ubiquitous rap break, I like far better rap songs featuring a pop artist for the chorus. This matchup with Kesha works well, as does the harmonica.
