Song of the Day #2,056: ‘Let it Go’ – Various Singers

let_it_goHere’s a version of ‘Let it Go’ presented in 25 different languages, a sampling of the more than 40 into which the film was translated.

This was the first ‘Let it Go’ variation to hit it big on YouTube, or at least the first one I saw.

My first thought was how impressive it is that Disney found so many singers who sound like Idina Menzel. Many YouTube commenters actually think it’s Menzel herself singing the whole thing (which would be quite the feat, but alas it isn’t the case).

Later, the feel-good international love-in was interrupted by complaints that Disney left out Arabic, Hebrew and any African languages (among others) in favor of a whole lot of Europe, South America and Asia.

I find it hard to summon any outrage over the slight. Sure, it would be nice to have a more representative sample, but who was expecting this sort of thing in the first place?

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation
And it looks like I’m the queen

The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn’t keep it in, Heaven knows I tried

Don’t let them in, don’t let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don’t feel, don’t let them know
Well, now they know

Let it go, let it go
Can’t hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door
I don’t care what they’re going to say
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway

It’s funny how some distance makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me can’t get to me at all
It’s time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me
I’m free

Let it go, let it go
I’m one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You’ll never see me cry
Here I stand and here I’ll stay
Let the storm rage on

My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I’m never going back, the past is in the past

Let it go, let it go
And I’ll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone
Here I stand in the light of day
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway

Wow, that is so cool. How did they het so many singers to sound alike?

Did disney put this video together? Do we know for sure that the film wasn’t translated into Arabic and Hebrew? I suspect it was, which makes the compilation slight less significant, particularly if Disney didn’t put this together.

It’s funny how I’ve foolishly avoided watching this video (which I’ve seen shared on FB for weeks), as I expected it would be jumpy and annoying 🙂 A few seconds in I realized they didn’t need to change the image – just the voice. I’m quick like that 😉

So… yeah, very cool. I particularly love the Cantonese and the Serbian (which sounds suspiciously English to me!) Just love this movie. I want to go see it again.

Dana, Disney did put it together, and the film was translated into those languages, so the complaint was that they had the footage but chose not to include it.

    Very Cool indeed!
