Song of the Day #1,996: ‘I Am the Walrus (from Love)’ – The Beatles

41_birthdayToday is my wife’s birthday. Only every seven years or so (not sure how Leap Years affect this) will both her birthday and mine fall on a weekend, so this might be my only opportunity to play the ‘Random Weekend (Birthday Edition)’ game for both of us in the same year.

So let’s spin the wheel and see what Alexandra’s 41st year has in store.

Interesting. This is a remastered version of The Beatles’ ‘I Am the Walrus’ taken from the soundtrack to Love, the Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show. The album was produced by George Martin and his son Giles.

Many songs were combined or reworked in this process, but ‘I Am the Walrus’ was left pretty much intact. The Martins did deliver the clearest, richest version of the track yet, because they had access to the original masters and were able to perfect the mix.

So what meaning does this song have for Alex’s birthday? She’ll probably say it’s a joke about her appearance, because she’s silly and has no idea how hot she is.

My reading is that it’s a brilliant, gorgeous whirlwind of a song for a brilliant, gorgeous whirlwind of a woman.

Happy Birthday, my love!

I am he as you are he as you are me
And we are all together
See how they run like pigs from a gun
See how they fly
I’m crying

Sitting on a cornflake
Waiting for the van to come
Corporation T-shirt, stupid bloody Tuesday
Man you’ve been a naughty boy
You let your face grow long

I am the eggman
They are the eggmen
I am the walrus
Goo goo g’ joob

Mr. City policeman sitting
Pretty little policemen in a row
See how they fly like Lucy in the sky
See how they run
I’m crying
I’m crying, I’m crying, I’m crying

Yellow matter custard
Dripping from a dead dog’s eye
Crabalocker fishwife
Pornographic priestess
Boy, you’ve been a naughty girl
You let your knickers down

I am the eggman
They are the eggmen
I am the walrus
Goo goo g’ joob

Sitting in an English garden
Waiting for the sun
If the sun don’t come you get a tan
From standing in the English rain

I am the eggman
(“How do you do sir”)
They are the eggmen
(“The man maintains a fortune”)
I am the walrus
Goo goo g’ joob Goo Goo Goo g’ joob

Expert, texpert choking smokers
Don’t you think the joker laughs at you
(Ho ho ho hee hee hee hah hah hah)
See how they smile like pigs in a sty
See how they snide
I’m crying

Semolina Pilchard
Climbing up the Eiffel tower
Elementary penguin singing Hare Krishna
Man, you should have seen them kicking
Edgar Allen Poe

I am the eggman
They are the eggmen
I am the walrus
Goo goo g’ joob
Goo goo goo g’ joob
Goo goo g’ joob
Goo goo goo g’ joob
Goo goo
Juba juba juba
Juba juba juba
Juba juba juba
Juba juba

Since we walked around Bath all day yesterday thinking it WAS the. 28th, I can think of another interpretation of this song where I am the walrus ;). I was worried we’d get our Happy Birthday song in just under the wire (in our time zone), while instead we were two minutes premature (again – in our time zone!).

Meanwhile, this song inLove was spectacular, and I think your interpretation is spot on, though I have never had any idea what the heck it actually means!

Aw, very sweet birthday dedication! Happy birthday, Alex.

On our train ride to Bath yesterday, I watched a documentary on the making of Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band album, which included discussion about the song “God” with John declaring he was no longer the Walrus (among many other things), he was “just John.” Really fascinating documentary providing insight into John’s brilliance.
