Song of the Day #1,887: ‘Heaven in the Afternoon’ – Belle & Sebastian

belle_sebastian_third_eye_centreIt’s been three years since Belle & Sebastian’s last full-length album, Write About Love, so I’ve been itching to hear news of a future release.

So imagine my surprise when an email newsletter from Amoeba Records (remember them?) mentioned new music from the Scottish septet.

It turned out to be not a new album but a compilation of B-sides and assorted odds and ends from the past decade. Hey, good enough.

Song of the Day #1,886: ‘Breakin’ the Chains of Love’ – Fitz & the Tantrums

fitz_tantrums_pickin_up_piecesI tend to buy new music in bunches. I suppose that’s because studios tend to time releases around particular periods, though apart from the holidays I’m not sure how that makes much sense.

At any rate, I’ve purchased five albums in the past week, a nice round number for SOTD purposes. I’ll feature one track from each this week.

Song of the Day #1,885: ‘Amity’ – Elliott Smith

elliott_xoHere’s a rare uptempo song from Elliott Smith — it’s downright hard rock by his standards. This isn’t a favorite of mine because I do prefer the pretty stuff (95% of his catalog) but it isn’t bad.

Song of the Day #1,884: ‘Angel’ – Sarah McLachlan

sarah_mclachlan_surfacingSarah McLachlan kicked off Random Weekends 19 months (and 597 songs) ago, but she hasn’t shown up since until today. Fountains of Wayne don’t know how good they’ve got it.

This is actually the tenth Sarah McLachlan song to make the blog, though, which is more than I would have guessed for an artist who left my good graces two albums, and ten years, ago.

Song of the Day #1,883: ‘One Mic’ – Nas

nas_stillmaticHere’s my final Nas track of the week (and probably on the blog, period, given how unimpressed I’ve been with his work). Like yesterday’s SOTD, this one comes from his Stillmatic LP.

I haven’t listened to it yet, but I’ve read that it features a sample of Phil Collins’ ‘In the Air Tonight,’ which is promising. Funny how a great sample can make a song work in an entirely new way. Think of the way Dido’s ‘Thank You’ goes from a sweet bauble to something ominous and sad in Eminem’s ‘Stan.’
